In April 1995, Front Mission's original release on the Super Famicom was well received. Famitsu magazine gave the Super Famicom version of the game first a 9 out of 10[30] and later an 8 out of 10 in their Reader Cross Review.[31] Mega Fun gave the game a Gold for an import game.[32] Front Mission: Gun Hazard was rated by Fun Generation a 7 out of 10, while Super GamePower gave it a 4.2 out of 5.[33][34] Famitsu magazine awarded Front Mission 2 the game 32 out of 40 upon its release.[35][36] The magazine chose the game as the number 63rd best game on the original PlayStation.[37] Greg Kasavin of GameSpot praised the graphics of Front Mission Alternative and audio experience, but criticized the game for being too short and rewarding players with more elaborate story sections if they failed to achieve game missions, indirectly rewarding failure.[38] He also called the soundtrack "a bunch of dizzying techno that doesn't suit the onscreen grandeur".[38] Hardcore Gaming 101 noted it was not a very deep real time strategy game, but praised its branching stories and variety of endings.[39] GameSpot noted that Front Mission 3 may be a title worth introducing the franchise to American audiences, but criticized its graphics for being a notch lower than Front Mission 2.[40] IGN lauded the game's battle mechanics as rare in other Square installments since Final Fantasy Tactics, but cited the graphics transitions between overhead play and individual battles as spotty.[41]

Front Mission 1st tasks the player with the goal of clearing each stage one after the other by defeating every member of the enemy forces, and as noted before it is split into two campaigns, with the original SFC campaign of the OCU, and the newer, PS1-added UCS, with both campaigns being based off the DS version, meaning that some secret missions have been added to take on if you manage to stumble upon their location, and general balancing has been done compared to the original SFC edition.
Despite the towns all being menu based, both of those features work rather well, and of course you also have bars to talk to NPCs and learn more about them, along with being able to check in on your commander to progress the story. Since some secret missions can be stumbled upon by checking bars and talking to certain NPCs at certain times, it is especially helpful to poke around and return to older locales, as unlike the shops, the NPCs available at bars are distinct to each location. All in all, you have a pretty great gameplay loop, with the OCU campaign being immensely engaging and well worth the price of admission alone.
After a reconnaissance mission goes sideways, war breaks out between the Unified Continental States (UCS) and Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU). Royd, the main protagonist who led the doomed recon mission, is discharged from the OCU military for his part in the mission. after a personal tragedy during the recon mission. He is later recruited by a mercenary group called the Canyon Crows, and assigned to assist the OCU in their war efforts.
One particular mission requires you to win a duel before the chapter can start. I lost at least five times in a row because Royd either missed, or hit the wrong limbs. Meanwhile my opponent landed almost every hit. To make matters worse, I lost those matches on easy mode. The entire purpose of having easy mode went out the window with this game.
The typical wanzer consists of four parts: a body, two arms, and legs. WAPs, which are about 20% bigger than WAWs, tend to be around 5.5 meters tall and, on average, weigh roughly 25 tons. As wanzer technologies developed, different types of wanzers begin to fill varying combat roles on the battlefield, involved in frontline combat, emergency repair of other weapon platforms, electronic warfare and reconnaissance. The development of WAW and WAP units also leads to derivative technologies, such as armored vehicle-wanzer hybrids known as "Mobile Weapons" (sometimes referred to as "Huge Wanzers"), armored vehicles that possess superior firepower and durability than the standard wanzers. Another derivative of wanzers is the "Advanced Wanzer ". Advanced wanzers are prototype models boasting offensive and defensive capabilities far greater than the average wanzers. They also tend to be 25% to 100% taller than the standard wanzers. Advanced wanzers have been revealed to be standardized with the formation of the MULS-P2 standard; regular wanzers are built on the MULS-P standard.
The events in Front Mission 4 take place six years after the original Front Mission (the first two games in the series were not released outside of Japan). Humanity is coming to grips with a new age of modern warfare built around the mobile wanzers (for extra German effect, it's pronounced "vanzers"). When peace starts to come apart at the seams, you'll get a front-row seat from the perspective of two main characters. Elsa is a Frenchwoman and a fresh recruit to the ranks of Durandal, a civilian corps dedicated to both the research of wanzers and the new application of technology to improve their performances. Darril is a UCS--or United Confederate States--sergeant on assignment in Venezuela, sent to ostensibly help put down a succession there. However, war (and work, for that matter) really isn't his thing. While they initially become involved in separate conflicts, it soon becomes apparent that a nefarious global conspiracy is afoot, and it's up to you to restore harmony.
I think it was a huge mistake giving them the rights to remake this IP. they dropped the ball on the first game, and I figured this one would be a mess after finishing the first. even their website seems lazy. its disappointing, because front mission 1-5 were really underrated and appreciated. and this series really deserves better.
"Briefing" prototype, preceding translation into in-game PlayStation Sound Format
Between missions Ide Sangorh, the Commanding Officer of IMAC, delivers briefings set to Arai's atmospheric techno track. As with Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations for Front Mission, Kutsuzawa's renderings of the protagonists display common sympathetic attributes. McCoy's teammates strike heroic poses, stoically putting their lives on the line in pursuit of ending the bloodshed.
The antagonists, by contrast, display crooked grins, facial tattoos, and slumped shoulders. These signifiers presage the introduction of Driscoll's Hell's Wall, an infantry division destined to butt heads with Wanzer pilot Royd Clive on Huffman Island in Front Mission 1st. It is the destiny of Blakewood's granddaughter Natalie to serve in Royd's mercenary unit Canyon Crow.
In addition to the overhead view of the game, the player can switch at any time to a first-person perspective from McCoy's viewpoint. FMA's designers created branching paths based on how quickly each mission is cleared. Separate locations and endings are encountered based on the player's skill level, incentivizing multiple playthroughs.
I have played Front Mission Evolved, and it is a not very good fps game... Part of the game is using the Wanzers and part is playing on foot, both are fps. Now, the Wanzer part is not good, part due to a very strange design decision, that is hard to explain, but I will try: Thing is you likely will jump from mission to mission without ever seeing the screen to customize your Wanzer, because while you can do this, unless you die in the mission or do some UI and menus search (which I can't remember) or are in a mission which force you to change a piece, you mostly like to miss the screen.
