In the spring of 1997, the dedicated Suitcase Clinic volunteer and
officer Robert Ratner composed an extremely influential document in
the history of our organization. It served as his thesis in partial
completion of his M.S. in Health and Medical Sciences, and was
entitled "Student-Run Health Clinics: Developing a Vision for the
Future". This rare and seminal work has recently been digitized from
one of the very few remaining physical copies by the Class Coordinator
Tanvir Kapoor, and can now be downloaded and read electronically by
any interested party, anywhere, via the following link to

Robert is presently the faculty advisor to Health and Medical Sciences
98/198 and also serves a member of the Advisory Board. His study
should be regarded as a fascinating snapshot of the Suitcase Clinic as
organized and expressed over a decade ago, and also serves as a
repository of much demographic data and official agency documents. His
articulate treatise thoroughly delves into themes as diverse as
community organizing, social justice vs. market justice, popular
education and the nature of ideology and power. Most significantly,
the newfound availability and accessibility of this document should
serve to broaden the collective consciousness of Suitcase Clinic
volunteers as to the deeply-rooted tradition of academic study and
intellectual inquiry within our continually-maturing organization. The
careful reading and inclusion of this paper in your perceptions of the
Suitcase Clinic is utterly encouraged, so as to deepen your
appreciation of our organization's remarkable legacy.
