If you don't mind using non apple software I highly recommend this app -osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html it's very simple but it will allow you to burn video DVDs (standard DVDs) audio cds MP3 cds data discs and even allow you to copy a disc onto the mac in iso format so it can be burned back to another disc later I have used this app since osx 10.6.8 and my mac is currently running macos Sierra 10.12.3 and it runs fine the process would be to export your video project from imovie to say the desktop then use the burn app to burn that movie file using the dvd tab here are some links to some how tos for the burn app 1 = -XiCZp72YA 2 = -P0dcx0Q3DM

Also there are a list of different dvd authoring apps here -solution/dvd-menu-creator.html unfortunately burn only gives you the option for a real basic dvd menu so you might want to go with one of these instead if you still have no luck call Apple and ask to speak with a product specialist and say you want someone to take ownership of your case what this basically means is you will be working with the one person until your issue is resolved trust me there are many good Advisors that know alot about the older software that could help out with this project and it doesn't have to be done all in one sitting either contact details will be exchanged and that way you can organise another convenient time to continue after you guys have started exporting/burning the first project as these steps take time and this can be done multiple times until you have exported your entire project maybe my brother is one of them I wish I could get him to give you a call as he knows the apps like the back of his hand but it's against policy to call customers outside of your shift apparently sorry it's so frustrating because I know he would point you in the right direction within a couple of minutes but seriously though if you need a hand gives Apple a call and get put through to a product specialist who as I said will take ownership and work with you until the movies are exported I wish you luck and definitely don't give up on this videos and photos are priceless they really are I assure you Apple will do everything possible to help you get those memories/projects you have no doubt spent a number of hours creating into a hard copy for safe keeping.

Yes, it's safe. However, I just tried it and it's really not worth the effort. It may burn and copy OK but creating a good looking video DVD it can't do. Try one of the free apps from the App Store. They are way better than Burn.

What do you mean by a "conventional DVD"? Do you just want to burn your movie file to a DVD data disk? Or do you want to create a video DVD disk that can play your movie file on a DVD Player thru a TV set. Those are two entirely different types of disks.
