A few thoughts after last night. 35 years on, we all have had changes - lost friends, family and that becomes a weight which we carry. We took a red-eye flight from SFO to NYC, and were a little worse for wear, missed the pre-show meet up as our rest was longer than expected. Walking into the venue, where we say many shows back in the 90's, hearing all of the tunes that Michael Azzerrad was spinning - Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets, Screaming Trees, R.E.M., started to bring me back to those earlier days. Of course, the opening chords of The Act We Act brought it all back, and part of me felt like it was 1992 again. After All of the Roads Have Led to Nowhere and Gift were highlights for me.

Some videos I captured from the back of the room:

Very good sound. Thanks for sharing these John. Vocals are exceptionally clear.

My take: This was very much a dream set for me.  Did not expect After All the Roads, figured we would get Act We Act, wasn't sure about Gift, figured we might get Come Around/Tilted (only Tilted tonight) but DID NOT expect JC Auto.  10 years ago I think I remember Bob saying he didn't think he had the pipes for it.  Not as ferocious as the Beaster era for sure, but he sure did let out a healthy scream at the end.  I very much enjoyed the new songs, which have definitely grown on me and are a valid addition to the Sugar catalog, IMO.

Band is not tight yet.  I caught a few miscues and missed beats.  To be expected on night one.  Bob is sounding and playing great.  Last year I was blown away at this, and he had it turned up tonight.  He was absolutely loving this. David was smiling from ear to ear.  Malcolm was focused.  To me it seems this tour is more for Bob and the band than the fans.  A well-deserved victory lap.  In all the times I've seen him, I am not sure I have ever seen him this joyous.  After the main set ended with JC Auto, he took the stage and shouted FUCK YEAH into the mic.

There was a scare mid-set.  During Clownmaster, I was watching Malcolm and he had started to lean back on the throne.  Was thinking he was getting into the pocket but the next moment he was gone.  Fell backwards.  Super strange moment as Bob and David circled the riser and continued jamming while others attended to Malcolm.  After a few minutes, he pops back up and they start the next number.  Scary for sure.  Maybe a brief bout of heat exhaustion as David mentioned it was as hot on stage as it probably was in the crowd.  I admit to keeping an eye on Malcolm the rest of the show but he played and sounded great towards the back half.  Might be a little sore after the spill as he was slow getting off stage.

31 years after my last Sugar show at Roseland NYC did I think, at 52, I would be seeing this same band again at this level?  I would have given it a 0% chance.  SO grateful I get to do it again the next 2 nights, and again later on in the fall.  Do what you can to get there.  This is amazing.

Earplugs not necessary.  Loud but not deafeningly so.

Has anyone any comments on volume?  I didn’t bring earplugs but I also assumed we wouldn’t see Bob’s stage rig measured at 126 db again.

Volume isn’t at the 1992-1994 levels, but it’s a loud show. There’s Sugar branded earplugs for sale at the show, and at had foam plugs. I had earplugs in but still have aggravated tinnitus this morning.
