As the leading supporter of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in
the world, Sun is proud to sponsor Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2008,
and is gearing up to educate the world (especially students), about
the benefits of FOSS and how it is Changing Y/Our World.

SFD Overview:
"In a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies,
it is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology
on our lives, and the importance of ensuring technology isn't used to
limit us, but rather to take us further along a path of opportunity,
innovation and freedom for all people." Pia Waugh, President of SFI -
2007

Pia's vision is the impetus behind Software Freedom Day (SFD), a
worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)
scheduled for September 20, 2008.

Please pour in suggestions for organizing the celebrations in our
campus. (We unfortunately have Test1 clashing with the dates).

The best alternative would be to organise the event on a different
date and because it is within the campus, the date would not matter
much.
Having a small event on the same day would not be fruitful as no one
would turn up even for Sun OSUM registration

Hey
You could perhaps have a SFD logo designing or T-shirt designing
competition. There can be talks by faculty members or students or video
presentations taken from the web which bring out the uniqueness and
advantages of GNU/Linux and FOSS.And it will be better if it is after
test 1 so that people can participate whole heartedly.

Hi,

So we have the following issues:

1) What date to organize the celebrations.
2) Faculty talks: topics and faculty to contact.
3) competitions: logo design, tshirt design, + what else...
4) A software display of free / oss software developed by students
5) presentations by students: topics and students

The celebrations for SFD in campus will be done jointly by the Sun User Group and the Information Systems and Computer Science Associations respectively.

Hey All...

Nice to know about this Software Freedom Day and the various events planned....Wish i can be there in campus at that time....

'An engineer from SUN (techdemo on Mobile Applications using Netbeans)'..... If this happens then it would be very good... Rakesh try out for it. If not I can tell One of my project mate 'Rishi' (he's in campus) to show up our project on mobile applications field. It was a Netbeans based mobile app ( a GPS kind of map navigation system for our BITS campus)...A live demo of it, is also possible as the software works on his cellphone...

Install fest - Willl it be on installing of LINUX O.S. or Solaris O.S. ..?

Thanks

Excellent!

btw, Moinak is not a former belenix developer, he is a former sun
employee, but still the Lead developer and initiator of the belenix
live cd project.

We have to add these events also coz we are getting goodies from
Mozilla

1) A Firefox stall for helping people install Firefox, popularising
the browser ,acquainting people as to how they can browse the web more
efficiently and solving any Firefox related queries.

2) Familiarizing the use of many useful plugins like FoxyProxy for
changing the proxy servers quickly, StumbleUpon, Mouse Gestures and
many others.

3) An interaction on the Development of Extensions for Mozilla Firefox

Cool enough !!!...Students would like such events....(As it is on firefox)

'An interaction on the Development of Extensions for Mozilla Firefox' ....This would be very useful for budding developers and suppporters of open source....

install fest for both OS (Linux and Solaris) according to choice is also a good idea...As some people do not prefer to install Solaris on their machine coz of the myth of Hard disk crash, on installion of Solaris...

We can screen a short film, called "Elephant's Dream".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant%27s_dream

Maybe even stuff like "Pirates of Silicon Valley".

will gather crowds, and first will demonstrate the possibilities and
power of open source software while the second one will be
informative.
