Nicholas "Fink" Haysom was a South African lawyer and diplomat whose
work focused on democratic governance, constitutional and electoral
reforms, reconciliation and peace processes. He was jailed by the
apartheid regime for his activism. Most recently known as Special
Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the United Nations
Mission in South Sudan, his involvement with the Sudans goes back at
least to the CPA era, and I recall meeting him in that regard more
than twenty years ago. RIP.

RJMEC PRESS RELEASE (FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION)

Thursday, 19 March 2026, Juba, South Sudan

RJMEC mourns Mr. Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations Special
Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan

It is with great sadness that the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and
Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) has learned of the passing of Special
Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the United Nations
Mission in South Sudan, Mr. Nicholas Haysom.

South Sudan and its peace-loving citizens were fortunate to benefit
from Mr. Haysom’s leadership following his appointment in 2021. He
brought with him decades of experience in international diplomacy,
including his role as legal adviser to President Nelson Mandela of the
Republic of South Africa. His passing is a great loss for South
Sudan’s peace process, which has long benefited from his wisdom and
guidance.

His expertise, drive, and deep understanding of the political and
security dynamics of South Sudan will be missed by all, who have had
the honour and privilege to work with him in the pursuit of
sustainable peace.

Mr Haysom’s values of honesty, commitment and belief in the rule of
law are some of the distinct attributes which we at RJMEC share, and
indeed, our two institutions were aligned in so many ways in efforts
to bring an enduring peace to South Sudan, enjoying effective and
constructive cooperation as we worked together.

As RJMEC continues on the path working on South Sudan’s peace process,
we will remember Mr Haysom’s warmth, dedication, and professionalism.
All of us involved in these important efforts will draw inspiration
and strength from the memories of his remarkable contribution.

RJMEC extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Haysom, the
United Nations fraternity and all who were touched by his life and
dedicated service.

END
