Information Technology would
like to bring to your attention a recent vulnerability on Apple
mobile devices (iPhones, iPads and iPods). This vulnerability
affecting iOS versions 4.3 through 4.3.3 allows for a back door
access to the device, while opening and viewing PDF files online via
the native Safari internet browser.
Malicious attackers taking
advantage of this vulnerability could potentially access information
such as passwords, online banking data, calendars, emails, text, and
contact information. They could also gain access to built-in
cameras, intercept telephone conversations, and obtain the GPS
location of the user.
Apple will release an update
to fix this issue in their next operating system release, which is
iOS 4.3.4; however, a specific date has not been officially
announced.
Information Technology
recommends the following:
·
Avoid using and
manipulating PDF files from unknown sources on Apple mobile
devices.
·
Do not open
unknown PDF files, whether they are received via email or linked on
websites.
·
Only visit
trusted websites.
·
Install iOS
v.4.3.4 once it is released.
