Gen, it was most likely the solvents in the white out that killed the
beetle. Entomologists have been putting down insects for years with straight
alcohol in a jar. Figures it would do it if you paint it directly on the
bug.
As for the spider, any paint good and safe enough for a kid should be safe
enough for a spider!

Omgosh its been forever since I posted on here and while I know in my
heart my time has been preoccupied with matters of love and
importance, I feel like an intruder to your group. Pardon my
interruption, but I'm just looking to pass on a job that I think is
pretty sweet Monmouth county nj. If your interested just email me off
line.

And I hope all is good with ya all! I'm seriously contemplating
bodypainting my spider wolfe neon pink...do you think it would kill
her? I had a stink bug that I painted with white out for the Village
Halloween Parade and well she died but that was before I learned about
facepaint safety. An adorable 8 year old proudly gave me this spider
so I dont want to kill it but she would look so cool in pink.

By the time you reply it will be too late.....

Gen - arachnids and some insects breathe through holes in their
exoskeletons (underside of their abdomen). I think the holes are a
lot smaller than human pores and clogging them up could kill them
despite your best intentions, unless you were to just delicately touch
the tip of your brush to highlight a few places (watch me run
screaming out of the room before I even get that far!!!)

best to look up each particular bug's anatomy before going too nuts.

btw I watched a bug expert documentary a few years ago explaining why
we had 3-foot-wingspan dragonflies, and why bugs are larger in rain
forests: more plants = more oxygen, so they were adapted to get
bigger.
