I love the idea of putting together a sculpture show out on the
island.
I have been visiting B.I. every summer for a number of years now, and
last year I applied for a small grant from the state arts council to
go out to the island and create a temporary abstract driftwood
sculpture.
Maybe RISCA would be willing to provide funding for a whole series of
driftwood sculptures to be created by a group of 3-D artists at
different sites on the island? The upcoming grant application
deadline is April 2nd if anyone is interested in pursuing this.

The best person to contact at the Rhode Island State Council on the
Arts (RISCA) is Cristina Di Chiera. She's really a great person and
is very supportive of individual artists. Her e-mail address is
crist...@arts.ri.gov and her telephone number is (401) 222-3881. The
RISCA website address is www.arts.ri.gov. You can access all of the
grant application forms and guidelines, etc. by just going to their
website.
The upcoming RISCA grant application deadline is Monday, April 2nd.
The application and all of the supporting materials have to actually
be in their office by the close of business on that day. (I learned
this lesson the hard way the first time I applied for a grant from
them; I mailed everything out on the deadline date, and then poor
Cristina had to tell me that she couldn't legally consider my
application!)
By the way, RISCA is going to have a free grant workshop in
Providence on Monday, March 5th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. It will be in
the Atrium Gallery at One Capitol Hill. That would probably be worth
attending if you're thinking about asking for a grant to create a
sculpture walk out on the island, or put on a B.I. sculpture show,
etc.
What you'll probably end up doing is asking for a Project Grant.
Keep in mind that even if you do get some funding from RISCA, you
probably won't get as much as you ask for. I think they almost always
cut down your number. For my Block Island driftwood sculpture, I
asked for $1200.00 and got $600.00. Also, you do end up waiting quite
awhile for the $$$ to actually arrive. Last year, I got the thumbs-up
from RISCA in late May/early June, but my check didn't actually show
up until late September.
As I recall, part of the reason I got the grant last year is because
my project was going to take place out on the island, and I think the
RISCA folks were excited about the idea of helping to fund artwork in
a different part of the state. So you might want to stress that in
your application.
If you do end up talking to Cristina, feel free to remind her about
my Block Island driftwood project last year. And if you get some
funding, I would definitely love to be a participating artist!
