Hello group,

I am considering purchasing a Shearwater Petrel 3 dive computer. But, it is not a model that pops up when configuring the dive computer for Subsurface version 5.0.8 running on Linux.

I wonder if it work if called a Petrel 2 or does there need to be a software change? Has anyone tried yet?

Thanks kindly for any information on this.

And, of course, it's impossible to extend enough thanks to the selfless developers that created and support Subsurface!!!

Why not try choosing Petrel 2 and attempt to download, and see what happens?

I almost always learn about new dive computers from messages just like this.

I'll reach out to our friends at Shearwater about the Petrel 3 and hopefully will either hear back that it should just work or will receive the information necessary to support it. They have been one of the top supporters of open source dive logs in the industry (next to Heinrichs Weikamp who are just... well... in a class of their own).

Fantastic. Thank you Dirk!

And thanks for your suggestion Stuart. I haven't purchased the Petrel 3 yet pending confirming it will work with Subsurface first. Although, based on Dirk's comments, if it isn't supported now, it ought to be very soon. ;-)

While it is never wise to make definitive statements about the future -- I am quite positive that this will either work as is or require a few changes that we will receive excellent documentation about really soon.

Just to tell you how amazing Shearwater is with these things. When the Peregrine came out, it worked perfectly well with the Shearwater Bluetooth software stack, but the key library that we use across all platforms to communicate with BLE dive computers stumbled over a small issue where the Shearwater implementation didn't follow the standard. When we reported this to Shearwater their response was to say "oh, oops, let us fix that" and within a very short time send experimental new firmware to me and then, once they completed their testing cycle, release new firmware for all of their users.

Think about this for a moment. Here's a vendor that has their own software stack and that's all working well, and they do this update as a high priority in order to accommodate this open source project.

You gotta love them for that alone (if not for their awesome dive computers...)

PS: and since transparency is a good thing - no, this is not a paid advertisement, but just like quite a few other dive computer vendors, Shearwater has sent me free "long term loaner" dive computers in the past to allow me to enable and test support for their devices. Given that I have very loudly and publicly complained about things that are broken in other dive computers that were sent to me for free, I believe I can claim to be unbiased here... but hey, I prefer to make sure that there are no misunderstandings...

FWIW: The Perdix 2 was also released at the same time as the Petrel 3.

Dirk, I went ahead and purchased a Shearwater PETREL 3 and am pleased
to report that it works great with Subsurface 5.0.9 running on Linux
Mint 20.1 Ulyssa and on Android. Thanks very much for adding that
product to the list of computers!

I might add that the BLE connectivity is solid on both of these
platforms with no fuss; it just works. One computer is a laptop with
built-in Bluetooth and the other is a desktop with a Bluetooth dongle.

One small thing I just noticed is that when I imported new dives from
this Shearwater Petrel 3 and also from a Shearwater Teric, they all
came in as Dive #0. Whereas, when I import from Scubapro G2 the
numbering is automatic. Of course, renumbering the dives is trivial but
just wanted to report this observation. Not sure if it is by design or
a minor quirk.

Hi Darrell,

Thanks for the update. Glad this works smoothly for you!

I have both a Perdix 2 (very similar to the Petrel 3 internally) and a Teric and I don't have that "dive 0" problem.
The logic for dive numbering might have gotten confused in your first download if you did include the "test dive" that is already on the dive computer when you get it - as that would tell Subsurface that there are older and newer dives on the dive computer which tells it not to try to renumber. But if all you have are dives that are newer than the latest dive in your dive log, and if the dives in the divelog are numbered already, then the newly downloaded dives should get numbered correctly regardless of which dive computer you download from (in other words, this is generic code, not dive computer specific).

Hope that helps.

Definitely makes sense when you lay out the logic Dirk. I should have thought of that. :-( Thank you! I just deleted the factory "test dive" from the computer and everything imported as expected.
