Hi everyone,

I've only just started to use Subsurface (I've got the latest version and I'm on the latest Mac OS), and I am just about to buy a new computer as well - the Shearwater Teric. Are there plans to incorporate the Teric into Subsurface? I would imagine so, since virtually all other Shearwater computers are supported... perhaps it isn't yet because it is so new. Am I on track with that thought? If not, I know I could probably go from Shearwater Cloud to another online dive log, and then into Subsurface, but the point of using Subsurface was to consolidate all of that.

I don't know when exactly I'll have the Teric (since it is backordered almost everywhere right now), but do you have a timeline for its incorporation, if that is the plan? Thanks a lot for the help, and thanks for what you do with Subsurface, I really love it!

Best,
Joe

I have access to a Teric (thanks to Shearwater) and am talking to them about one missing piece of documentation which they tell me I should get fairly soon. So I expect to be able to add support for it in the near future

A first experimental version that should support your Teric (but NOT on Windows, sorry - no BLE support) is available here:

Hi Dirk,

Thanks so much for your reply, and sorry for the delay on my end... I actually had to save a bit before I was able to buy the Teric, but it finally arrived yesterday and I'm thrilled.

I was able to connect it to the Shearwater Cloud app, but I still prefer SubSurface. The only thing is, I can't get it to connect to SubSurface on my Macbook Pro. It's an old mid-2010 model, and so I had to use the dongle that came with the Teric in order for the Bluetooth to speak. Could that be a problem?

I tried the link you sent, but I wasn't sure where to go after that. I'm usually pretty good with tech things, but when it comes to code and the more complex stuff, I'm pretty useless. Sorry! Can you help?

Thanks again!
Joe

Joe,

In my experience connecting with Macs is painful. I have a Teric right here and even on my brand new MacBook Pro it often takes three or four attempts to pair. One specific issue is that if the Teric thinks that it is already paired (for example with the Shearwater app, or with an iPhone) it doesn't broadcast its address. As I tried to test this to remind me of the steps just now, I had to restart BT on the Teric five times before it was found by Subsurface. BTW: when you scan in Subsurface and turn on Bluetooth on the Teric, if it isn't found within about 15 seconds, cancel Bluetooth on the Teric and turn it on again.

I know that this isn't the best experience, but we have so far not been able to figure out how to make this process more reliable.

BTW: please use the latest release of Subsurface, not a current build. That link was useful a month ago when we just had an experimental version. Since then this has been improved and included in the recent 4.8.3 release.

/D

Hi Dirk,

I have a Teric that I've been using for several months.   Today I noticed that Subsurface 4.8.2 and later support the Teric.  I downloaded the app for my Android (Samsung Note 9) phone, and I get a repeated snag:  the Teric only sends two dives then says "communication error".  I also downloaded 4.8.3 for my Windows desktop; Windows 10 supports BLE and in fact my Perdix works in Subsurface on Windows 10, but no Teric option.

Any thoughts on the Android/Samsung Note 9 communication error?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I just returned from a dive trip and downloaded data from my Teric both on
Android and macOS every day. I also did a clean download on Android of
about 30 dives in one batch.

It would help us to see a full log of such a failed attempt.
Start Subsurface-mobile on Android, do such a download, and after it
fails, go to the About screen, copy the log files into the clipboard and
then send them in an email to this group (or to me directly).

As for Windows - the challenge appears to be incredibly buggy and unstable
BLE drivers in the OS. We seem to be close to being able to having Windows
support, but we still don't have anything that works reliably - so
officially we don't support BLE on Windows, yet.

the Perdix AI and OSTC+ work reliably for me with the Windows installer.

key requirements:
- installed latest Windows 10 update.
- installed latest BT(LE) driver; the alternative to that is to get a
BTLE dongle.

Just one data point: I have a Galaxy Note 8 and I just got a Teric. Saturday, I did my first dives (3) with the Teric. When I tried to download them using Subsurface-mobile on my Note 8, the first attempt displayed a strange message on the Teric and, IIRC, on the Note 8, it said that the operation timed out. I tried again and it worked the second time, downloading all 3 dives.

Total dive time for the 3 dives was only just under an hour. I.e. around 18 minutes each.

I did 3 more dives on Sunday, 2 very short and 1 longer, for a total of just under 1.5 hours. Those downloaded with no problems.

My observation is that the downloading process from the Teric seems to be much slower than downloading from my Perdix AI.

My Perdix works fine on Windows 10 too, but the latest version of Subsurface (4.8.3) doesn't list Teric as a choice; and previous postings confirm that the data format is different for Teric.  I previously tried using the 'Perdix' and 'Perdix AI' choices to download from the Teric was unsuccessful.

is your Teric paired and does it appear in the list of devices when
you search/scan for it using "force LE" in the drop down in "Choose
bluetooth download mode ..."?
also could you send the subsurface_*.log files from your
c:\users\<name>\appdata\roaming\subsurface when the download from the
Teric fails?

thanks

Hi Lubomir,
I can't get access to attempt to download from the Teric on the Windows version of subsurface 4.8.3.  It doesn't show the Teric as a choice in the submenu for Shearwater devices.

The download attempts I have made have been from my Android (Samsung Note 9) phone.  The Bluetooth works and connects; the "sending" starts, and then fails after sending the two most recent dives.  Since I had never previously downloaded dives from the Teric, and I've had it for several months, there are 112 entries in the Teric log.

Thanks,
David

hi, i have the Teric in my list, but my version is slightly newer than 4.8.3.
see the attached screenshot.

also you should be able to scan for the address of the Teric using the
button in the image.

You need to try with a current test build, e.g.

https://github.com/Subsurface-divelog/subsurface/releases/download/continuous/subsurface-4.8.3-221-g9c6d24e50e22.exe

Actually, the full link changes whenever we push new code, so simply go to
https://github.com/Subsurface-divelog/subsurface/releases/tag/continuous
and download the file that follows the pattern

subsurface-4.8.3-xxx-gxxxxxxxxxxxx.exe

The release version 4.8.3 doesn't include the experimental Windows/BLE code, yet.

Thanks

Thanks Lubomir,
I did force the LE scan; and the Teric showed up listed as Perdix but with the hex address.  When I try to download using that address, however, I get a "cannot connect" error.

I'll go get the latest version of the build and give that a try; thanks!

make sure you only pair the Teric for that experiment - i.e. unpair
the Perdix temporarily first.

thanks!

Hi everyone,

I updated the firmware on my Teric the other day to v11 (I had been running v09 since I bought it, and I hadn't realized there was an update... I should check more often). Today, when I went to upload my dive from the Teric to Subsurface mobile (I always do it to the phone first since the Teric connects more easily to that, then save it to the cloud and edit everything on the computer app)... anyway when I went to upload the dive on Subsurface mobile, the app recognized the Teric as a Shearwater Teric in the dropdown menus, but then it started to want to sync older dives that are already on Subsurface, and it's trying to sync them as a Shearwater Petrel.

I've attached some screenshots. This should be dive 33 being saved, but it's also trying to send all of my previous dives again, and I don't want them to overwrite what I already have saved on the cloud. I also don't want the dive log to say Petrel (on the actual dive profile) if that's not what I'm using. Maybe I'm too picky and particular. I also think that it's probably trying to download the old dives that are already in the log because it thinks they are coming from a new computer (the Petrel). Is that a possibility?

Is this a problem with compatibility with the new SW firmware update? Never had problems before.

Thanks in advance for any insight/assistance!
Joe

hi,

this could be a bug in the mobile app.
did you try downloading using the Desktop app under Windows 10?
we are looking for feedback from users about Windows / BTLE.

The Release Notes for Teric firmware v11 (2019.01.03) say, in part:

"Fixed serial number formatting in log opening record and final log record (now matches Petrel formatting)."

https://www.shearwater.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Release-Notes-TERIC-V11.pdf

I wonder if that is throwing things off.

I've figured it out. We should have new test binaries at some point today
(meaning Tuesday Jan 22 - being in New Zealand means you're ahead of
pretty much everyone else in the world)
