Import dive sites?

Hi, I'm brand new... ;-)

I have just transferred my logs from Cressi Donetello (via Goa scree) to the PC version of subsurface via the Bluetooth interface (but connected to the PC with a cable). the subsequent transfer to the cloud version (incl. iOS app) also worked. Direct import from the iOS app has not worked so far. I'll try something else here...

Now to my current question:
I saw that you can import existing dive site files. Since many dive sites are identical, the question arises whether there is a "public" dive site file from the Red Sea, for example, that I can import.

There is no centralised ‘database’ of dive sites that Subsurface can use that I’m aware of, I’m happy to send you an export of my dive sites if that’s any good to you, I’ve got lots of sites up north my Sharm and Hurgarda and also places like St John’s and Deadalus.

This is potentially a very interesting idea.I dive in South Africa and Mozamique so know a fair number of reefs and inland spots. However, I was on a business trip to Cancún, Mexico a few weeks ago (ICANN conference). I would have loved to be able to click on a map and then viewed perhaps an overview of what it would be like to dive there, costs, equipment rental - etc. Best option so far is Googling - but you don't always get a first hand experience... just people trying to part your money away from you.

A few years ago after I worked on the code in Subsurface to import and export dive sites, I prototyped a community site to share dive site information at https://www.scuba-sites.com. In the 3 or 4 years that is has been up, we have accumulated about 850 dive sites in the database. It has the ability to not only import the XML files with dive site information exported from Subsurface, but it will also allow you to export a dive site from the database to be imported into Subsurface. I haven’t really been doing any active development on the site for a couple of years, but if there are features or enhancements people would like to see, I can add it to my todo list.

Hi Jason, all.

There already are a number of organisations out there that are crowdsourcing lists of dive sites and making the data available to the community (through their website) - like this one for example: https://www.padi.com/dive-sites/cancun/?place_id=ChIJ21P2rgUrTI8Ris1fYjy3Ms4

In most cases dive site information can be contributed to these lists in a format that can be exported from Subsurface, like UDDF. I am not aware that any of these lists offers an API that allows their data to be re-imported into Subsurface (as their business model normally capitalises on people browsing dive sites through their web interface), but I am also not sure that Subsurface would be adding a lot of value by starting one more of these crowdsourcing efforts.

Cheers

I just tried to upload the dive sites from my log. Importing worked but when making them public it complains that everything has the same coordinates as "Riff Williams" and then becomes pretty much non-responsive.

There appears to be an error in the API authentication that is causing problems right now making uploaded dive sites public. I’m working on it.

I finally got a chance to fix the bug — it should be possible to make dive-sites public now in the scuba-sites.com website. Please me know at do...@scuba-sites.com if you have any problems.

Hi Doug.

Thanks for setting up and running this service.
I registered for it last Saturday, but when I am trying to log in the login page (https://www.scuba-sites.com/login) just keeps reloading.

Can you see what is going on?

Ngā mihi

Hi Doug.

My bad - I only now realised that Chrome had used the username from the registration to prefill the login screen - now that I have changed the login information to the email address the login is working.

@doug

I've just come across this after picking up diving again after my son passed his Junior Open Water. Has scuba-sites.com been retired as I can't access it at the moment.

Cheers

My apologies. There was an error on the scuba-sites.com website that I missed that were causing problems. It should be up again now and I’m adding some better monitoring scripts to alert me if there are troubles.

@Doug

Thanks so much for sorting. Until they changed their T&Cs I used to use Uptime Robot for monitoring a site I host, but they got all moody and banned me as they deemed it commercial. It was but it's a hobby website selling a board game that my friend developed so hardly Walmart.....

This is everything I need and I will add to the DB and keep in bi-directional sync with my Subsurface list. Thanks for running, it would be great if more people picked this up and I'll circulate around a few people.

One thing it seems that '&' signs in the XML need to be replaced by & in the Export to allow proper formatting so they can be loaded into Subsurface. Maybe a change request :-O

I'll have a look at my locations today and see if i can upload them, there are some i cannot share so i'll need to prune them out first.

@Simon, I will take a look at that when I am home from my current dive trip (Kona, Hawaii).
