Dear fellow Suunto Nautic users,

I’ve been in contact with Suunto regarding some of the limitations of the latest software version, particularly the lack of a proper desktop application where users can view ceilings and the full range of Bühlmann decompression data that is either unavailable or difficult to access through the iOS app.

I’ve been also moaning about some aspects of its current software version and some confusion that de dive planner might suggest.

What I found rather ironic is that Suunto’s own recommendation, if I want to analyse this information in more detail, is to use Subsurface.

I wrote back and point out that it seems odd that owners of Suunto’s flagship dive computer need to rely on third-party software to access data generated by the device. Even more so when the Subsurface developers themselves have expressed frustration about the limited transparency and availability of Nautic data.

At present, neither the JSON nor FIT exports appear to contain anywhere near the amount of information that is available within the Suunto ecosystem.  I asked Suunto to publish the protocol specifications or to adopt a more complete and standard implementation of JSON and/or FIT exports, including all the data that software such as Subsurface is capable of handling.

In light of this, I would encourage other Nautic users to contact Suunto and raise the same concerns.

They have beep particularly fast in replying;-)

In the meantime I got the following email. I am sure that the genius guys who write subsurface are aware off but here it goes just in case!

Hi Miguel, you're not the first that is pointing Suunto to the lack of proper app for Nautic. Me and few other colleagues already asked them same questions so they should be more than aware that current sunto app condition is not what divers are looking after.
As for json and fit export / import into Subsurface, what data are you missing? TBH I can't see any on my side and I alredy imported few deco and non-deco dives, with stage, gas changes and so. The trick is to import both fit and json parallel into one dive in Subsurface
As for Suunto API, this may look interesting, this endpoint in particular: https://apizone.suunto.com/api-details#api=suunto-workout-api&operation=export-workout-fit, although *.fit indeed does not have all data (DC reported deco ceiling is one example, its available in json tho)
