Can't communicate with cloud or dive computer using Flatpak on Linux Mint 21.1

I've had problems before with cloud communication other than via my smartphone , but 'fixed it' by deleting my account from my smartphone and reinstating it on my Windows desktop.
However, after updating Subsurface from within the program on my Linux Mint 21.1 laptop yesterday, no communication with cloud or with internet at all is possible from within the program, which asks me to check internet connection.
A clue might be that when I tried uninstalling and re-installing (flatpack) to no avail, so tried installing from the AppImage, I received the error "/home/charles/Subsurface-5.0.10-x86_64.AppImage
can't find Subsurface localization for locale "en-AU"
(I'm in Australia)
I also can't download dives from my G2 dive computer, even though bluetooth communication works (the right device comes up in the Subsurface window) and USB communication also works outside Subsurface: I can certainly copy the G2 logfile to a local directory, but I don't know how to get Subsurface to translate it.

Any advice gratefully received.

While the distro independent package formats (AppImage, Flatpack, Snap) are all in theory great ideas, we frequently see cases where "updates" to the packaging infrastructure suddenly take permissions away from the apps.
Weather it's access to the file system, to the network, or to devices. And there isn't really much that we can do. There are just so many combinations of things that can go wrong.

Is Mint similar enough to Ubuntu that you can install a Ubuntu PPA on Mint? That's likely your best bet to get this to work

Yes the PPA will work just fine on Mint, that’s how I run.

Thanks for that - will give that a fly and report back.

OK - Done ... and both Cloud and Bluetooth connection to Scubapro G2 both work (haven't pushed my luck by trying USB)
However, I didn't know how to install the PPA other than through Software Manager, and Software Manager would only find and offer to install the Flathub version - until I removed FlatPak capability first :

sudo flatpak remove --all
followed by
sudo apt-get purge --autoremove flatpak libflatpak0
and
$ sudo rm -r /var/lib/flatpak

After that, Software manager found the PPA and all went ok.
I'm sending this before rebooting - if the system goes pearshaped because the first command removed -

Keep safe,

Yes - confirmed all OK: on rebooting, everything still worked as normal, so none of the removed flatpak-related items were necessary to the system.
Thanks again,
Charles
