Requirement for git when building from release tarball

I've built the 4.8.5 release from the tarball for TinyCoreLinux, but in the build process it requires gitlib. What functionality does this provide? If it is only for software updates, then how can I build without it?

libgit2 is used as cloud storage mechanism. You cannot build Subsurface without it
