I have upgraded my Suunto Steel to Bühlmann model.
When I want to download the dives I get an error Message "Fehler beim öffnen von Suunto (Steel)"

Bildschirmfoto 2021-06-14 um 20.40.20.png

Does anyone knows why this is happening?

I use a Macbook using Catalina 10.15.7

regards

The EON Steel is not an FTDI device... just keep that field empty.

Fascinating. I didn't realize that Suunto did that, but I think it's a
great move.

Oddly enough, it seems to not be a regular microcode update.
Apparently you have to send in the dive computer to an authorized
service center to get the Bühlmann mode activated. Very strange.

> When I want to download the dives I get an error Message "Fehler beim öffnen von Suunto (Steel)"

The fact that you have to actually have an authorized service center
do some work makes me think that there is some hw side to this
upgrade. I wonder if the USB ID changed. That would explain why we
can't even open it.

Can you do "lsusb" or whatever the OS X version of that is to show
what the USB ID is when the device is plugged in.

Also, it's almost certain that other things changed too, ie I would
expect a few new protocol details. The Suunto download format is well
designed and extensible, so it might all "JustWork(tm)", but I
wouldn't be surprised if there are other changes.

I guess I should dig out my old EON Steel and send it off to Suunto
myself. I've been using the EON Core for diving, but I have an EON
Steel somewhere still ..

Hello Linus,

Yes I have sent it to Suunto for the Update.
After receiving it the ID was Suunto Steel Black, which I have not seen before.
I also needed to update the DM5 Software from Suunto.
The Update is only for the Steel and costs around 80€. Including some maintenance, changing the rubber buttons, etc..

Need to check how I can do "Isusb" or similar as I have never done such things before.

Click on the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and on 'About this mac'
then 'System report'
bottom item under 'Hardware' is USB
click on the Suunto Steel Black and send us the information given there.

Ok, can you get the actual numerical ID? The fact that it has a new
name does suggest it's likely anew number too.

> The Update is only for the Steel and costs around 80€. Including some maintenance, changing the rubber buttons, etc..

Yeah, google found the Suunto page for it for me, and I suspect I'll
do it. But I obviously won't get it back for a while, so in the
meantime I'm going to rely on you for details.

Sadly, we hardcode the USB ID's in subsurface (and libdivecomputer),
so it's going to need an actual update of the program, but once I have
the numerical ID I can generate the trivial patch to do that.

And yeah, as Dirk said, it's not FTDI, but if the USB ID has changed,
we won't recognize it as a native USB device, so..

Hello Dirk,

The FTDI is greyed out.
so I cannot change it.

That ID is in libdivecomputer but the change was merged after 5.0.1 was released.

Can you try a recent test build with the latest libdivecomputer?

I notice that I don't have a 10.15/11.x build for that... but once you accept the security warnings, this one should still run on 10.15

Thanks

Ok, crossed emails. Here are the numerical ID's:

Oh, actually, we already have that "EON Steel Black" in libdivecomputer.

So it should work. Let me look around.

Hi Dirk, I made that.
The only USB I found is the one I recently posted.

My Garmin can be found without any problem.
See screenshot.

Ahh, that explains it.

Then with a newer daily subsurface build hopefully "just works".

Here's an image for 10.15 that should be correctly signed to run out of the box

Good.

It would likely be interesting to see

(a) the debug data if you check the "Save libdivecomputer logfile"
checkbox ("Protokolldatei speichern" in German)

(b) what the "Extra Info" fields look like (I think "Zusatzdaten" in
a German locale) for new dives that were done after the update?

In particular, the "Extra Info" fields should have something like
"Deco algorithm" in it (along with all the Serial numbers and battery
data).

Traditionally on the EON Steel that was "Suunto Fused RGBM", but it
hopefully now says "Bühlmann 16 GF" or something like that.

I'm sure you already know that the default for the Suunto EON Black
upgrade seems to be the same old Suunto Fused RGBM model, so the above
assumes that you actually also went into the dive settings and made
that Bühlmann be the deco model.

That all assumes you have any new dives with that deco model, of course..

And from the libdivecomputer logfile, I think I should be able to see
if there are any new additional fields that we currently don't parse..

Hi Linus

Deco algorithm is "Buhlmann" as expected

I can send you the log file from a dive if you want.
just let me know your email then I will send it to you.

Perfect. Looks like everything is working - I assume the profile etc
all downloaded well too.

And I've created the shipping label for upgrading my own EON Steel, so
in a few weeks I'll hopefully be able to verify that on my own.

Please use "torv...@linux-foundation.org". Thanks,
