import from garmin mk3i to windows 11 subsurface 6.0.5504 (or to Android)

I've read previous posts and tried but I am still unable.   

Import from dive computer.  I can see the device in file explorer but when I use the 3 dots in the import from dive computer within subsurface (which opens an identical-looking window) the device is not listed. I assume this is some kind of recognition problem that I don't understand. The mk3i is in MTP mode and there is no other Garmin software installed on the PC.  (Using Garmin mode does not work either.)

Import from log files.  I navigate and select an appropriate activity file but subsurface cannot parse.  Maybe I need to use Garmin software to convert and export FIT files before importing?

I do really want to use Subsurface.  My dedication thus far has including hand editing XML to recreate my logbook in Subsurface when I could not get my Suunto files imported.  I had really hoped that by switching to a new dive computer things would be better.  TRULY, what I would really like is to import from my MK3i to Subsurface on my Android device as I don't always have a PC available until I return home from a trip.  So if there is a way to import to Android, I'd be thrilled to have any guidance on how to try that.
