I'm away on a diving trip ATM, managed to not bring the computer with submerge installed.

I'm using a current Linux Mint system, I've installed the PPA, and successfully installed Subsurface.

I'm having issues with creating a new dive log. I've got downloading from my Oceanic and Suunto dive computers working, but cannot save the data.

I suspect an issue with Linux Mint, not quite matching Ubuntu.

As a work around, can I create a dive log manually ?  Is it a simple file, or is it structured?

It would seem I could open a dive log if one existed, but I get zero response from file> create new logbook. I guess it should offer a dialog like file >open logbook  entry does.
 Version of Subsurface is 6.0.5357-CICD-release

Checking for software updates gets the message:

The server returned the following information:

"You are running a build that is newer than the current release"

Nothing I have done should have got me anything bot the standard release from the PPA.

Help please, the internet bandwidth available to me is pretty low, but I did eventually complete what seems to be a working version,  other than the issue with creating tje logbook.
Cheers Harry

Not sure there is anything wrong there. The 'New logbook' menu item does
nothing more than close the currently open logbook - the same as what
'Close' does.

After this you can go ahead and download the logs from your dive computers.

All issues resolved, downloading nicely from my oceanic veo 180, and Ive 10 dives logged.

I have suunto vytek and viper computers as well, but I've not got those working yet.I suspect I need some additional software, but don't know exactly what.
Any help much appreciated. Hopefully a minimum download package as internet bandwidth here is extremely limited, even for searching for apps.

It might be a bit of an old thing and not relevant any more so take this with a pinch of salt but you could try and make sure your user account is a member of the dialout group.

Not the issue, I also have an Oceanic veo 180 that downloads fine via that port. Dialout group membership sorted to permit  the Veo to download.

The issue with FTDI driver for old model Suunto download interface is also resolved.

[350.688824] usb 3-1: Detected FT232B
[  350.690117] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0
The Suunto download starts, and then errors with dive data import error.
Same for the Vytec.

I seem to recall in the distant past when I got this all working on my older computer I needed some piece of Suunto software loaded for the download to work.
If I recall correctly that was something like movescount or from that package, but that seems to be obsoleted, not available from the Suunto download site, as far as I can tell..  I've seen mention of an open source Suunto download utility on one of the development sites,, but I've no luck tracking that down over the wet string I'm connected to the internet by.

Thanks for the help so far, at least I can get the logs from the Veo. The Vytec is air coupled  and my first bives with it, so would love to see the profile from that.

You should probably look for Suunto Dive Manager, or DM5.

Install of that application on Windows also install the drivers needed.

Quick goggling did not give drivers only. I have installed software, then uninstalled keeping the driver only.

Do not know if it runs on Linux though. But you might be able to extract or fetch drivers from the information install package gives.

Best of luck!

Unlikely that you'd need something like a 'driver' when using linux.
What changed since the last time this was working for you?

I have what looks like a driver exe  "suuntousbftdi212.exe"
Can Subsurface run that exe directly, or will it need to be executed via wine?

Where will subsurface look for that driver ?

Thanks so much for the help,  I'll try to tag the eventual installation steps to this thread to keep it documented.
Cheers Harry
