Hello Guys,

Thanks for the today webinar!!

Just to introduce myself and to start with the first steps in evaluating the Substance for our needs.

I'm a software engineering at SciELO, leading the SciELO developments in the last 5 years.

It's been a while since we've started implementing a production and publishing workflow based on JATS.

We have our own XML markup system and already have a lot of XML produced according to JATS DTD and some SciELO Styles.

At this momment we are interested in use the Substance to produce the visualization (HTML/PDF) of our documents.

Could you give us some guidance (docs and libraries) on how to start to use Substance to produce custom previews for our XML's?

Regards,
Fabio Batalha

Hello Fabio!

Glad to meet you!

So the use-case you describe can be solved with Substance (without utilising the editing features even).

So you would need a converter to map from the XML to a Substance model. If your XML is JATS 1.1 compatible you will be able to use our existing JATSConverter. Then for the rendering you have to assign custom Components which take the data nodes and turn them into HTML. There's no direct support for PDF output in Substance, but it could be done with Node.js PDF libraries. E.g. http://pdfkit.org/

Cheers,
Michael
