For us, the biggest challenge was making it lyrically rhyme because in the song kombadi palali, tangadi dharun, langadi ghalaya lagali worked more because of the way it rhymed, so we wanted something similar because we thought without the rhyme the song would not work. But Amitabh Bhattacharya came up with these mindblowing lyrics -- Aaayi ! chikni chameli, chhup ke akeli, pawwa chadha ke aayi...-- pawwa chadha ke aayi was Atul's line.
I was going thru the older postings of songs and I suddenly came accross this song.
This song has made my memories greener. The writer of this song MAKHDOOM MOHIUDDIN (not Moinuddin) was our family friend in the 50s and 60s till he died in 1969.
Our Hyderabad house was very big and my father had a beautiful garden where there was a big Chameli Mandav on which the Chameli vine was flowering in the seasons. There also was a big Zopala( a wellspread jhoola with cushions to seat 3 to 4 people).Whenever Makhdoom saab used to come,he preferred sitting under the Chameli Mandav on an easychair.Actor, director and producer Chandrashekhar, who hailed from Hyderabad and knew Makhdoom saab well, requested for a song for his film and Makhdoomsab wrote the above song for him.But it came in the movie after a lapse of time only.
Makhdoom was a Poet,Dramatist,Teacher and in the last phase of life,a political leader with left inclinations. He was also an MLA.
His 3 more songs feature in films- 1) Jaanewale sipahi se poocho-Usne Kaha tha(1960) 2)Aapki yaad aati rahi-Gaman(1979),and Phir chhidi raat-Bazaar(1982).

Ritesh Deshmukh (actor) had attended one of our concerts and so suggested our name as the music directors to director Karan Malhotra and producer Karan Johar. He told them that if you are making Agneepath than you do listen to Ajay Atul. They heard our work in Marathi movies and decided that the genre of our music will fit the flavor of the cult film. .
The Ajay-Atul Live in concert is on calendar, the dates are not yet planned but it will include our entire catalogue comprising Marathi as well as Hindi songs from Agneepath, My friend Pinto and Singham.
While speaking to a leading entertainment website recently, Karan expressed his concern over item songs as he said, An item song is when she is objectified and when there are men lusting for her like Chikni Chameli. I don't think I would ever do that again. It's never gonna happen in a Dharma Productions film and I will make sure of it. Like Desi Girl is not an item song but Chikni Chameli is. And, I don't think I would do it."
"When I came into the industry, I had no clue what I was doing because I came into lyrics writing quite reluctantly. I wanted to become a singer. So when I started, for the first few years, I was never thinking about the consequences of what I was writing or how my songs were perceived. I have learnt a lot since then, about what I do and don't want to do during the course of my career. For example, when we did Chikni Chameli I remember the rest of the songs of the film were made and a so-called 'item number' was needed, Ajay-Atul and I had tried quite a few attempts but nothing was getting approved. It had come to a point that other composers and lyricists had also been asked to give their options. In the end, and I don't know whose idea it was, we decided to take the rights of a Marathi composition by Ajay-Atul and do a Hindi version of it.
Here, it is Chameli who is having such a side conversation, making for a break from the usual presentation of item songs. Chameli moves from dancing, almost forcedly, with her pimp to negotiating with him across a table, to almost being dragged out of the bar by the same pimp. This displays the thin lines between agency and non-agency that women, including sex workers, negotiate in their everydayness.
