Here is a detailed procedure to blacklist Nouveau followed by the installation of nvidia driver. You may read this as a continuation of @johnwolf1987 answer since blacklisting Nouveau was not covered over there.

Note: The value of nvidia-VERSION could be nvidia-410, nvidia-412, nvidia-418, and so on, but you must be careful in locating correct Nvidia Display Driver. Ignoring this, may result in blank screen upon reboot.

I had a similar problem. I blacklisted the Nouveu driver, then could not get a display. I used an ssh client from another machine on my network, and ran the installer fr my NVidia driver from there. one reboot later, and I was in!

I've created bug report @bugs.launchpad.net so you can add your info too.

I prefer to install nvidia driver from default Ubuntu app 'Software & Updates'-> Additional Drivers->choose Nvidia->apply. Reboot. You can check your driver version by nvidia-smi command in terminal. For me it's 390.116
I had the same problem and nothing helped me. The only thing i did and it works i described above.
seems the problem is in Kernel v4.18.x, v4.20.x (that's i tested for my hardware on different OS's and Kernels. Everything still work okay on Kernel v4.15.x, so if you want you can use it instead of 5.0.6)

Just want to add some comments based on the above answers, I believe the most important thing in my case is, you have to make sure to install the correct nvidia driver, never blindly follow other answers, they are old posts.

Hello. Just started using i3-gaps (from GNOME) for a few days. Before installing Nvidia driver, i3 running normally on nouveau driver. But after installing Nvidia driver, i3 wont showing, only black screen after login. My laptop is Intel HD 520 + 950M. i3 config is still default one. GNOME running normally. Maybe someone know the fix?

Use the installation media chroot in. Use the journal to show messages for a boot with the issue without the nvidia module being black listed.
See the tip box from List_of_applications#Pastebin_clients to pipe that output to a pastebin then post the link here.

My theory is that the new nvidia driver (never updating drivers again... fix your crap nvidia) caused my 3080 to work more power than it has, because the first few black screens I've encountered, the screen goes black followed by 100% gpu fan usage (or very high fan usage).

Installing EOS had no issues until I started installing the Nvidia drivers. I following the instructions laid out here: -and-network/graphic-cards-gpu-driver-and-setup/nvidia/nvidia-installer/. After reboot, All I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left of my monitor. There is no shell prompt, or anything of the like, no way for me to get diagnostics.

After rebooting, I tried starting Fedora using the kernel 6.1.14 without the nomodeset parameter and I was able to get to the decryption screen and enter my password. The loading animation starts but the screen goes black before I can see the login screen.

My suggestion is to remove what was installed from the cuda repo and instead enable the rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver repo and install from there with sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda which will give you both the nvidia drivers and cuda as well.

The nvidia driver from rpmfusion is built using akmods and for that purpose dkms.service is not needed. The fix for the dkms error may be to disable the dkms service with systemctl disable dkms.service then reboot.

I've been dealing with this for a few weeks now. Anytime I try to update my driver to a Nvidia driver the screen will go black. It'll make a noise when I click on my mouse like there's a pop-up, but obviously, I can't see it. When you restart the computer, it'll freeze on the loading logo. I've run through a good bit of troubleshooting, reinstalled Windows multiple times and even brought my PC to a shop to get the hardware checked. I couldn't find what the issue was, and I haven't found anyone who might know.

Tip: Read this article How to Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode (While Booting) [6 Ways] to see how to boot Windows in Safe Mode after starting Windows and when suffering from a black screen.

Fix 2. Run the Hardware and Devices TroubleshooterThe problem of a black screen after installing a graphics card driver on Windows 11/10 may also be related to computer hardware, such as a power supply, motherboard, or display cable. To rule out hardware as a factor, you can identify and resolve hardware failures by running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

After reading this article, you should know how to fix the black screen after installing a graphics driver. Just try to reinstall the driver in safe mode, run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter, update BIOS, and clean install Windows.

I have installed Pop!OS on my tensorbook, after Nvidia drivers automatically updated, now my laptop is nearly complete died. When I restart the laptop, it turns to black screen, then overheating with loud sound, finaly it seems shut down.

Followed the guides listed below, which all resultet in the same result: black screen at boot. Managed to uninstall nvidia drivers with alt+f2 f3 f4 and retun to nouveau, but never got the nvidia drivers to actually work.

It can draw text on the screen using the same hardware, so I wonder if the text based console even uses the Nvidia driver, or does it use some generic low res driver, and if so, maybe it goes black at the point it tries to switch to high res graphics?

This was the solution for me. I tried to open sketchup, the work screen was black, I clicked on windows, clicked on preferences, clicked on open GL and unchecked use fast feedback and as the little girl on the commercial says Waa Laa. I have windows 10 and it uses Intel 64-bit Hope this helps someone else as it did me. Thanks all who helped me get it done.

You mean the whole computer screen, not only the inside of your SketchUp window? The only time I have seen this was when a graphics card in my old computer failed. It first started blacking out in SketchUp (logically, as it taxes the GPU much more than other applications) but afterwards it started failing in other applications too. So a hardware fault is also a possibility. Is the cooling system in your PC and on the graphics card functioning normally? The Nvidia control panel has also, if I remember right, a function to monitor the operating temperature.

Following @Anssi hardware concerns, a completely black screen could also mean a monitor is going bad which recently happened to me. Other bad monitor symptoms included monitor driver reloading and the screen display restored and once even got a BSOD. Reportedly a recent Windows 10 update has also affected a few monitors using NVidia cards though graphic driver update fixed that issue for many of those people. Are you referring to the entire screen or just the SU workspace?
