If neither automatic nor manual repair works, there are some recovery methods that might help salvage your data. You can also take some preventive measures to avoid losing your work by automatically saving a backup copy of your workbook or creating a recovery file from time to time.

In the window How would you like to repair your Office Programs, select Online Repair > Repair to make sure everything gets fixed. (The faster Quick Repair option is also available, but it only detects and then replaces corrupted files.)

You can also try other methods to recover workbook data when repairing a workbook is not successful. As a preventive measure, you may want to save your workbook often and create a backup copy every time that you save it. Or you can specify that Excel automatically creates a recovery file at specific intervals. This way, you will have access to a good copy of the workbook, if the original is deleted accidentally or if it becomes corrupted.

Had a partition wiped out, managed to recover some files with testdisk. Two (probably more) of the .xlsx files I'm attempting to open can't be opened by excel. Instead it claims they are corrupt. The Excel feature 'Open and repair' doesn't fix the issue. Have also tried a third party tool called sysinfotools xls repair with no progress as well as attempting to open the file in google docs.

I unfortunately formatted my HDD without backing up a specific excel-file. Just after formatting my HDD, I managed to recover the file using recovery software, but unfortunately I am unable to open the file or repair it.

I am using the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus where I created a Dashboards of sorts in .xlsb format. Which I use all of the time without problems. This file has worked great up until today. When I open it I receive an error stating "Can't Find Project or Library". I do no know this is referencing a missing Reference file in VBA but when I open the VBA Editor the windows become frozen in the editor and no codes are visible. When I select Tools Reference nothing happens. I have had this happen on a different, unrelated file about a month ago and a quick repair fixed the issue. I just completed the repair and the issue still exist. My next step is online repair. Before I do this, I simply do not understand what went wrong, when nothing changed. Is there a fix for this that someone could let me in on. Everyone here knows how critical it is that when presenting data to clients, that in order for them to have confidence in your data it must be correct and without error. Well it just so happens that when I was presenting this in a meeting today is when the file decided to go haywire. My company is beginning to invest heavily in AI software and once again this does not look good on me or Excel. It just bolsters up AI Software even more (which will eventually replace us data analysts). I know the folks at Excel are working hard so, I am not miffed at them but Excel has got to get better. I have so many examples of this type of stuff happening more often than not. Not just me but my other Data Analysis partners as well. Excel needs to hire some of its old school retired programmers back and sort the messes out and teach the new programmers.

@heylookitsme Further Investigation (opened in Safe Mode) allows me to open and select all of the data in the VBA Editor (which I quickly saved to word). Tools, Reference shows 5 Checked Ref Files: out of those 5 files the Locations of them are accurate and good. No Blank or unusual file references showing. However, when I view the Object Library Window there is a selection for VBAProject which is not listed in my Library Reference and the location of the file is showing the same as this file with this file being its reference. So, this is what is causing the error. Now how to remove a Reference Library that is not showing in your Refence toolbox and how to locate and add the VBAProject Reference so it can be added back into the reference library from the correct location.

@heylookitsmeSo for anyone with this issue here is the fix: I opened tools and selected VBAProject and then changed the name to something else. This caused it to drop that bad file reference object that was just pointing back to the same workbook. Not sure how it happened.

I have a business critical Excel .xlsb file, that I have been updating/using for years (it contains about 20 sheets, and a lot of VBA code - none of which runs on opening).

Yesterday, the file refused to open on 2 different work PCs, both running the same, fully updated version of Excel from an Office 365 E3 business subscription. Whilst I thought this one file may be corrupt, I have used this file for many years, with many older versions on the file saved (some of which have not been used/opened for years) - and Excel was suddenly unable to open these versions either!? When trying to open the file, Excel would simply freeze for a bit, then close with no error messages. Opening Excel in safe mode made no difference, same issue. Further info on this led me to believe the problem was with the latest version of Excel as:

- NB I could NOT open the .xlsb file in Office 365 via the browser, I got an error message saying it needed to be viewed in the desktop (which of course didn't work either)

So there is something in this file (and previous versions) that the latest version of Excel/Excel online does not like. NB other .xlsb files I have so far seem fine.

This looks very similar to another user's issues, reported in Jan 2020 (which appears unresolved):
-workbook-xlsb-crashes-on-new-computer-and-latest-...

Can anyone shed any light? I now have a working .xlsm file - but I was only able to do this as I had a laptop with a different version of Excel on - if this wasn't the case then I could have been scuppered. And it makes me wary of using .xlsb files full-stop for now!

You can also use a third-party tool to repair your .xlsb file, such as Stellar Repair for Excel or Kernel for Excel Repair. These tools can scan your file and recover data from damaged worksheets. Have not used these tools myself, but are recommended by some, so without guarantee.

Hi, did you ever get this resolved? I seem to have a similar problem where my .xslb file immediately closing when opening with no error message. Excel then does a repair and it works. But after a while making some macro changes, it happens again. I have tried removing all macros and reloading. Same problem after a while. I am on Windows 10, Office 360 16.0.16501.20074 64 bit.

I have a excel.xlsx file saved in my system which has been corrupted .I atleast need to recover the data stores .It is a file of 124 KB and has around 35 worksheets in the workbook .I have tried all possible ways to recover and repair the file .i even tried to extract the data using 3rd party application like stellar, ease of use recover application of excel still i have no luck . The below error message im getting whenever i try to open the file.I even tried to open it through other applications like wordpress, google sheets and so on but nothing works .

I copied and pasted the file to my desktop, right-click and changed '.xlsx' to '.xls'. Boom!! I got my file back.
Try to open your corrupt file in safe mode. Press Windows+R and write excel.exe /safe and click OK. Good Luck

I've tried all solutions posted here, and also all solutions proposed by Microsoft, but I had no success. It's frustrating because I can see that the size of the recovered file is a little bigger than the outdated file, what is coherent. Also, the same problem occurs with all spreadsheets restored. I still think that this thing is related to One Drive.

Looks like it is removing data validations from a particular sheet, and I realize that is true when I navigate to that sheet in the UI. To work around this unwarranted and repeated data-validation removal that Excel application is enforcing, I created a macro code that will re-instate all these data validations as required. The real problem arises when this Excel file is opened on a different computer with Microsoft Office 365. Looks like it is removing not just data-validations but also other components like named ranges and buttons. There could be other things that it might be removing, which I am unaware of at the moment. So the macro created to re-instate the data-validations is no longer useful.

As rightly suggested by Ron Rosenfeld and e_conomics, the issue was with the data validation lists, whose sources were strings of comma separated values that were going beyond 255 characters. Apparently, that is a limitation with Excel.

When I replaced the sources of data validation lists (string of comma separated values) with the ranges containing the corresponding values, the problem resolved itself. The repair dialogue never appeared again.

I tried all of these recommendations to no avail. I even went as far as to buy a file repair application (it just crashed repeated). In the end I found that I could open my Excel file in Numbers! I then exported from Numbers back to Excel and voila! Problem solved!

I have experienced the same problem and was wondering if any software can help me fix the issue. I could not find any software that can repair Excel file on the Mac so I copied the file on Windows and tried demo version of a software. That works up to an extent, but could not recover the formatting.

This is an excellent tip, and saved me several hours of rework. I had a largish file with some tangly formulas with indirect, dcount/dstdev, averageif, and some array formulas and it stopped opening. Excel would crash with a EXCBADACCESS every time, on multiple machines and the most recent backup that would open meant losing several hours work. After opening it with auto-calculation turned off and saving it and turning auto-calc back on, it stopped crashing Excel on open.
