Brain change linked to stroke risk

Alterations
in the white matter of the brain increase the chances of an older person having
multiple strokes.
White matter is found in the inner part of the brain, through which most of the
brain’s nerve connections pass. In a condition known as leukoaraiosis, there is
scattered loss of white matter throughout the brain, Researchers in Israel are
now linking this condition to increased stroke risk in older people.
They found that those with leukoaraiosis were 1.5 times more likely to have a stroke than those with normal white matter and twice as likely to have multiple strokes, The team looked at 685 patients with carotid artery disease, using computed tomography imaging to look at the brain. Age was the strongest risk factor for developing leukoaraiosis, but diabetes and poor circulation were more weakly linked risk factors
