I am trying to put together a factual based song about the Bloody incident
in which a young unarmed 14 year old girl was shot in the back of the head
by British troops on Monday the 6th Sept 1971
and i would like as much information as possible on this Murder
Like
What was the childs name
What was she doing there (did she live there or was she passing through)
What (if any punishment did the Soldier Suffer and what was his Name)
The song when finished will be recorded by Wilderness
and be FREE for you to download from their site at

Ask Greig, as usual he was there and witnessed everything.

I looked this up on Cain
(http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/sutton/chron/1971.html)

"Annette McGavigan (14) Catholic
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: British Army (BA)
Shot during street disturbances, while standing at the corner of
Blucher Street and Westland Street, Derry"

Scroll up a few lines and find for 3rd September, 1971:

"Angela Gallagher (1) Catholic
Status: Civilian (Civ), Killed by: Irish Republican Army (IRA)
Shot while in pram, during sniper attack on nearby British Army (BA)
patrol, Iveagh Crescent, Falls, Belfast."

Which of them was deliberately murdered to terrorise the community and
which was accidentally shot in a tragic accident is not obvious from
the above.

While you're waiting for inspiration, why don't you look up the word
'ghoul'.

Somehow I doubt Wilderness will be doing songs about the Border Foxs'
removal of fingertips from a dentist taken for ransom.

Why, why, why?

This is as helpful to the peace process in the North as the entire
recorded output of the Rev. William McRea.

It seems to me that it's an Irish tradition to write such songs. Personally I
think it's why the Irish folks have survived as well as they have with all they
have been through. I've learned more Irish history from their music than any
other source.

Not by a long shot! But considering I didn't know Jack before... ;-) Just
offering a different opinion. I would imagine that when a lot of those older
songs were written there were probably similar concerns voiced. Something like
this incident, or like our own Ruby Ridge or Waco should be remembered so it
doesn't happen again. Passing down a song would probably work better than force
feeding facts to school kids. Of course I hope the song she writes isn't like
that stupid song some of the kids sang when I was in school about the Titanic
that basically made fun of the whole thing. My mom actually called the school
and complained about that one. She normally NEVER did anything like that!! ;-)

I agree, and Irish music (ballads, etc.) has been a constant companion to
the Irish - as well as being something they are very good at. However, many
of these ballads are constantly being recycled... Perhaps it's time to move
on, away from the woes of the Troubles.

as a north american cherokee/irish i have a peculiar viewpoint on the
troubles.
grew up listening to two grandmothers debate the woes of the trail of tears
as opposed to the troubles and the famine.
there is no forgiveness for attempted genocide.
period.
when people quit doing wrong to you and yours,
peace can be possible, and a new arrangement made.
i guess part of the "irish question" is the 25 million north american irish
descent that only see one side to the issue.
it is an issue involving more than one detail, and of course the north
american viewpoint is simplistic.
(grin) but we ain't exactly good moral christian folk either, just ask the
vietnamese.
i think the diaspora damaged us in someways.
the descendants of celtdom in north america need the warmth and kindness the
old clann structure provided.
without it, i fear we would provide guns and bullets, money and bodys to
keep the troubles going forever.
best that be considered in making the blessed peace in ireland more lasting.
i do not see this entirely as a good thing, i am a combat veteran myself,
and i know that them that has to bury the dead and experience the violence
get tired of the pain.
there are not alot of pretty words for burying
children, and war always kills women and children. there is no escape from
that dreadful price.
i just know my fellow americans , we are blindly loyal to the catholic/anti
english side, even those of non celtic birth.
about 16 to one. it will take some work to get the american people to
forgive, for us the famine was yesterday, the highland clearences the day
before, and time has not really passed since. many who visit the isles are
surprised to learn that time indeed continued to pass after our forebears
left. christ my family has been in north america since 1735, and we still
celebrate the varied and asst'd victorys and defeats against the english. it
is a real obstacle to lasting peace. i say this with kindness.
(if you are a fain, it is hard to have two sides to an issue involving sinn
fein.) you folk have managed to step outside of the cycle of self
perpetuating violence for abit. i pray to all gods
past an present that you find a miracle an keep it so. north america will
produce a virtually unlimited supply of sinn fein supporters of all types
from now until the end of time. it is a problem even for the us army, in
which celts are routinely over represented. (we have a tradition of
service).
calm heads need to work at keeping the peace, and also at proclaiming it in
america.there are more people of irish descent in north america than in the
old countrys, maybe even in the entire isles.
good luck,, and may the god(s) grant a lasting peace, and an end to the
blood shed.
