Dear friends,
I am writing to ask if you would be willing to share information about my NIH-funded variability with adults who stutter. We are nearing the end of recruitment, and I just need a few more participants to reach our final goal of 100 people.
The study is designed to gather large speech-samples from people who stutter in their everyday, real-world environments. Participants wear a small microphone and voice recorder for seven days as they go about their lives. We then transcribe the recordings
using CHAT codes for inclusion in FluencyBank, carefully anonymizing and de-identifying the transcripts along the way—and removing conversational partners’ speech to maintain confidentiality. We also collect responses to a range of commonly used assessments
related to stuttering.
Participants must be adults (18+) who stutter who reside in the following states only:
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana,
Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia,
West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
The reason for this restriction is that these states allow “one-party” recording authorization. That is, only one person in a conversation needs to provide consent for a recording to place. Other states require “two-party” consent, so we are not recruiting
from those states.
Our study information page includes a screener to determine whether participants are eligible. Participants are compensated for their time spent in interviews, completing surveys, providing recordings, and engaging in a debriefing session.
The easiest way to share information about this study is simply to forward this email to adults who stutter. If you prefer, you can copy and paste the information below.
Thank you for your help in forwarding this along. And, as always, please let me know if there’s anything that I can do to support you in your own research.
Take care,
Scott

The Spartan Stuttering Lab at Michigan State University is seeking adults who stutter (ages 18 and above) to participate in a study of the variability of stuttering. Participants will wear a small microphone and recording device during their everyday conversations
for one week. They will also complete a series of questionnaires about themselves and their experiences related to stuttering. Participants will be compensated for their time.
To see if you qualify for the study, visit
https://stutteringlab.msu.edu/screener/ and answer a few questions about where you live and your history
of stuttering. A member of the research team will respond to you with next steps.
