One of the best things is the updates, there have been 12 updates to this software in 2010 alone! The latest update also includes a cool audit of every PC that has logged on / off of the IP range. Also you can add any WMI / Remote Reg query you want, so basically you can find anything out from multiple machines.

Further to my previous comment, it seems that the download links are still working; my problem was that Zippyshare is now blocked in the UK for some reason. (Seems to be blocked by Zippyshare itself rather than by my ISP.) I managed to download from the given links via a VPN.

@olliebean: thanks, I've updated the entry with a note and contacted @userfriendly who helped us out with the original freeware mirror. I have a copy of the freeware version, but it's very old so hopefully we can find a better one.

Use .xml config instead of .ini.

I was using v5.4.8 with netscan.ini config file. The v6.0.5 ignored the netscan.ini and created netscan.xml in C:\Users\\Documents folder. Switches /xml or /ini did not help. I had to copy netscan.xml from Documents to the folder where netscan.exe was, to make the settings portable (window title should have "[PORTABLE MODE]" appended to it).

@I am Baas please someone help. this can't be downloaded either even after updated link. tried in IE/FF/gchrome. any mirror possible?

In addition to using the option "/ini", you can also now use "/xml" to save settings in an xml file when running on a hard drive an if you do not want to store things in the registry.

The /xml is a much better option since if netscan is run from a removable USB drive, it writes settings to an xml file on the drive by default.

I'd be cautious using anything to do network discovery via pings. You don't want to "ping of death" your own network from the inside, after all. I've seen ping storms bring corporate networks to their knees.

For users or admins that are on a network and want to see what's available. Since many network services are made invisible behind firewalls, you often need specific IP addresses -- Network Scan helps you find them.

Beginning users: Select Options - Auto Detect Local IP Range, and select the network adapter that's connected to your network. Then click Start Scanning in the main window to get a quick idea if the program will be useful or not.

Softperfect Network Scanner is a portable IP, NetBios and SNMP scanner that runs under all Microsoft operating systems starting with Windows XP all the way up to Windows 10, and all server operating systems starting with Windows Server 2003.

The application is offered as a portable version or installer for Windows, and as a version for Mac OS X systems. You can start the portable version of the application directly after you have extracted the archive it is distributed in.

Update: The most recent version of the program is no longer available as a free version. You can download a trial version that is not time limited but limited to displaying ten devices. The size of the program jumped up to a size of between 4 and 5 Megabytes depending on which version of the application you download.

The program interface is clean, and accepts an IP range at the top. The default is IPv4 but the application supports iPv6 as well. You can enter it manually, or use paste operations instead. You may add more ranges to the scan during setup, and use auto-detection of local IP ranges, external IP addresses and IP ranges as well.

Some of the options are disabled by default and have to be enabled in the program's options. This is for example the case for MAC address detection and discovery of Open Ports. The ports have to be entered in a comma separated list, by default only port 80 is checked.

The network scanner supports additional features that make it interesting. I can launch third party applications that can be integrated into the software. It does support Wake-On-Lan and Remote Shutdown, can mount and explore network resources and list logged in users.
