opentask manager.

go to startup and if ai.exe is there set it to disable.

go to services.

look up the ai.exe service and disable it if the option exists.

reboot.

if all is ok. then open task manager and delete the startup entry for ai.exe if it was there initally.

so after reading that.

i would just rename the file to something other than ai.exe (ai.exe.orig will do) and create a dummy empty file ai.exe. make it read only.

stick it in the original folder and see what happens.

if it breaks ms office then just delete the new file and rename the old one back.

then there should be an entry in computer config/admin templates. (gpedit)

(check user config also but computer config will take priority if both exist)

if your struggling to find it click all settings and it should be listed there alphabetically. (hopefully)

if it exists ai.exe launch should be in with the rest of the keys for each application its opened by.

likely a PS or a command prompt string. set as a key.

so outlook may have a string that loads the ai.exe

simplest way is probably search for ai.exe and then disable every entry you find.

but as i say this comes with a risk so make a restore point at the very least before you make edits.

While I figure if I can propagate a direct file restriction policy through GPOs, I just set the AI.exe file Security Settingsto only be read by SYSTEM. That truly prevents this process from ultimately being read by anything, and it still keeps it alive to be updated by the Windows Installer process:

rename the original

create an empty txt file. give it the name ai.exe and put it in the original folders.

then when ai.exe is called it sends back loaded file successfully but will load nothing but an empty file.

I purchased and use Office 2021. When I load office programs they show as Office 2021. However, Office 365 shows as installed on my PC, and Office 2021 does not show as installed. I never accepted or installed 365 nor do I want it at all.

Now, when I use Office 2021, such as Word 2021, there are all kinds of freeze ups. I look in the Task Manager and there are all these iterations of Microsoft Edge WebView 2 processes and an ai.exe artificial intelligence host from Microsoft running under the Word process.

I want my Office 2021 separated from Office 365 so I don't get all this. I already tried uninstalling Office 365 and then going to my Microsoft account online and reinstalling the Office 2021 I bought, but the result is the same.

I have been having this same issue too. I have the Micrososft Home and Business Office 2021 and when I try to use IT I get 365 instead and when I go into the account and such I see both of them listed. I did receive an initial help to get it to be 2021 but then when setting up my Microsoft Cloud seems to have brought it back again? And now when I "Log out" it shows it as my 2021 but when I log in then it shows it as 365! Ugh what is going on?! Why on earth can we not have some kind of TOGGLE to go between the two vs us being sent a way we do NOT want to go?!

Since i last posted i have had quite an experience, i was unable to work for 2 days as my office 2021 was held hostage. I signed up for 365 and couldnt use that either. Tech support "suggested" it was my computer of course. I bought a new computer, same problem, it became evident that it was my microsoft account. I also had a subscription for onedrive storage that came with microsoft 365 basic. i told them to cancel all those subscriptions from my account and then i rebooted and office 2021 was back and working. whole endeavor cost me a computer i didnt need but i also do need the onedrive storage and several days later microsoft was telling me i had exceed the free basic account storage space and needed to upgrade.. so back to this again. now i have onedrive storage and microsoft basic is not interfering now but if there is another major update its possible i will have to ask them to cancel and/or find another cloud solution. hope this help!

I spent my quote in the market, but I'm retired now. It never ceases to amaze me the answers from people fashioning Microsoft badges; are all robotic, given answers like they are addressing users with zero knowledge. It never occurred to them that the fact they came here pointed out that they were already digging around. Please, I know the difference between registration and activation, or authentication: Office has been activated, my account is there when I go to File>Options>Account, and it does not read Office 2021, it says Office 365! Please, people, read twice the questions before answering them.

Office 2021 is just the marketing name for the OTS version of Office. Office 365 (or now known as Microsoft 365) is just the subscription based service. They are the same version of the software. You register one with a product key (which is probably tied to your MS account for life) and the other is just tied to your MS account assuming you pay a yearly fee.

So at this point I think you are just getting mixed up with the naming. When you open your version of Office, does it have a product key listed? If so then that is the version you purchased at retail. If you go to your MS account you should see it listed as being retail as well. However if you look at your MS account and it is says there is an expiration date then that means you have an active MS 365 subscription as well. You would have had to buy that yourself.

Note that Windows 10/11 shipped with Windows Store versions of Office that were basically trial ware. To remove them you would use the Apps and Features option or just right click the tile icon and select Uninstall. These versions were designed to get people able to work with Office documents after installing Windows without having to also install Office. If you have a full copy of Office then these extra versions aren't needed.

Edge has nothing to do with Office. They are not related nor is WebView2. WebView2 is the UI component that wraps the browser and it is required in Windows. You don't have to have Office to get or use it. Again, they are completely unrelated. Most likely what is happening is that your Office addins or documents are trying to open HTML files and that requires a browser which is what would trigger Edge to start up. That has nothing to do with Office 2021 vs Office 365.

With the last update i had a very expensive problem where i couldnt work for 2 days due to Office 2021 being held hostage . I uninstalled and tried to reinstall as you did. I also have the onedrive storage subscription which also has microsoft basic and the update defaulted to microsoft basic and would not recognize my Office subscription even though it was on my MSA dashboard. None of the 4 technicians could solve this. Finally i asked them to cancel my subscription and voila! i was able to use my Office 2021. Now problem is my onedrive is too large for the free version and they do not offer onedrive storage without this 'ms basic' .. a week later i get notices that i will not have access to my storage. Hard to work with all this so i signed up again. Apparently i need another storage solution, i have an external drive but what a PIA, in the meantime i am able to work and i crossing my fingers no big updates are imminent.
