When Givens and wife, Phebe Mae Givens, established a scholarship foundation in 1972 that would later become the Givens Foundation for African American Literature, little did they know that a rich collection of rare books, manuscript material, and ephemera documenting African American literary history would eventually bear the family name. The Givens Collection had been part of the University of Minnesota's Special Collections and Rare Books Department for nine years when the design for the bookplate was developed in 1994. Austin McLean, then curator of Special Collections and Rare Books, recommended to Givens Foundation president Archie Givens Jr. that a bookplate be created to identify the collection's increasing number of rare book acquisitions. The illustrations by Jones and Gilchrist-Roberts, which had originally appeared [End Page 67] on the cover of an edition of the curriculum guide, an educational resource published by the collection in 1988, were thought to signify clearly what the collection represents. The bookplate exists in two versions: a general plate that simply indicates that the book belongs in the collection and a plate that also identifies the donors of gifts. Open a book from the literary treasure trove that is the Givens Collection, and your eyes will be greeted by one of these plates.
