Hey all,

Osurb is meeting up this Tuesday at 7pm in Dreese Labs 264. We haven't announced what we'll be hacking on yet, so feel free to respond with suggestions.

Some ideas off the top of my head:
- Backbone.js
- New Rails 3 features
- Mirah

I plan to start going to the meetings and Backbone looks pretty sweet.

Hey Everyone,

Last week we hacked on Express, a sinatra-esque Nodejs framework. As for this week, so far we've had one thumbs up for hacking on backbonejs. Since we only had one reply, I'm assuming people want to continue what they started last week or have other topics in mind. Either way, please chime in on what you're thinking. Also, keep in mind that the "theme" is just a suggestion, feel free to come to the meeting to just hang out and discuss/hack on whatever peeks your interest.

If it turns out people are interested in hacking on backbone, it might be beneficial, for the sake of time, to have a toy project and just add backbonejs into the mix. If you don't have a project you'd like to add backbone to, consider pairing with someone who does (Find me, I do!).

For those interested, here's a little introduction to backbone:

Backbone.js is an MVC framework for your client-side javascript. In other words, it is an organizational tool that aims to prevent your javascript from being tightly coupled to your markup (i.e the DOM). In Backbone, you represent the data received from the server as a model. These models tend to have views, which are in charge of displaying and redisplaying the model's data as it changes. Backbone controllers, much like Rails controllers, offer a way to map routes to actions. However, in my brief experience with Backbone, I've found models and views to be more used more frequently. Fore more info: http://documentcloud.github.com/backbone/

Also, if people are interested, I can give a small informal presentation/discussion on my experience with backbone before we dive in.

Hey Tony,

Maybe I am the only one, but I have not used backbone before and I often
find I learn better when someone presents something. A really short
presentation at the beggining of the meeting would be pretty helpful to me
and, I imagine, others.  If it's not too much trouble could you talk about
it for a few minutes?

Anyone else think a presentation would be nice?  If I am alone here then I'd
rather not suggest a presentation.

Ryan, I'm sure you're not the only one.

As for a short presentation, I'd be happy to. At the very minimum, we can discuss as a group why it might be useful to use something like backbonejs to organize javascript. Just know that I've only been using it for a short period of time.

Tony,

I expect a 50 slide Microsoft Power Point presentation and the technical expertise to answer all questions, whether they be in regards to backbonejs or philosophy.  Also, you will be videotaped and the tape will be sent to all of your future employers and immediate family members.  Do not mess this up.

No pressure,

Ryan

P.S. Is sarcasm not OK in a/this mailing list?

Sarcasm is a bannable offense. Or perhaps bananannable. It's one or the other.

The presentation will be so good that I plan on having it etched on my tombstone.
