My Fellow Rubyists,
This quarter has flown by. We are nearing the end. We have done depressingly little for the
quarterly project. Lot's of plans, unfortunately little working implementation.
Therefore I am proposing we get together this week and try to get a respectable v1 up before the end of the quarter. Not speaking for anyone else, I've got comparatively little going on this coming week so if there's going to be a time to work on it, this next week will be it.
I'd like to take a moment to specifically address
anyone lurking on the list. If you'd like to
get involved in the club, please
reply. If you don't know any Ruby or Rails or have much of a clue of what is happening, we could pair you up with a more experienced dev and you can start learning. Being involved takes effort, but that effort
pays off tenfold. Our regulars will participate, but this is a great chance for you to get involved.
We want you to participate. We want you to learn, create, make mistakes, introduce new ideas, and become part of the community.
I'm proposing next week be a Hack Week for the Ruby Club. I really have very little I need to do next week so I'm going to try to spearhead this effort. I'm looking for other people to participate. If you still have midterms, paper, or big projects due this week, sorry for the poor timing (everyone has been there).
I've just blocked off the
beginning of next week on my calendar to work on this project from
9:30am until 11pm Mon-Wed (all the time that I'm not physically in class). I'm going to be working on this stuff at those times at SEL Library, 3rd Floor (tentatively, looking for better suggestions) and I'll also be in IRC. This may seem like overkill (and it may be), but I think executing this project well will truly be a more worthwhile way to spend my time next week than reading Reddit (likely alternative) or trying to already start studying for finals (unlikely alternative). If you'd like to work with me/us,
please reply so I can try to coordinate this. I'm not asking for you guys to necessarily work only with me, but rather just letting you know when I plan to be available and trying to take the lead on getting people on the same page.
The simplest way to help me coordinate would be to
fill out this poll and then I can post the results. Just select what times you'd be free to hack on stuff next week and hit submit. It's that simple. If you have better ideas than SEL for physically working together, leave a note in the poll comments or shoot me an email.
tldr; Things are going down next week. It's going to be exciting.
Happy Hacking,
Alex Burkhart
For anyone not completely up to speed with things happening this quarter within osu.rb:
- We've consolidated club information onto a simple website, osurb.github.com.
- We've started a project to create a Book Exchange at OSU. See the README on github for many more details.
- We've been using IRC to coordinate. We're hanging out in #osurb on Freenode.
