Hey guys!!!

Just so you all know, there is a free symposium put on by CTBUH
(Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat)
It is on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 1:30 - 6:00. There are
prominent architects from around the world speaking about some of the
most significant projects completed in the past year.

If you are interested, go to ctbuh.org under the events tab and awards
to sign up or email me and I can send you the pdf to register. If
your plans change, then its not a big deal to not show up or only come
for part of it, but if it gets filled up and you did not register it
may be difficult to get in.

Another thing worth mentioning is that a student membership with CTBUH
is only $50.00 for one year. With this you get all new publications
mailed to you. This includes the quarterly journal along with other
materials. All of these articles are written from amazing architects
and engineers from across the world. You also receive 10% off all
publication orders and believe me, we have many that are really great
references to have. You can buy this membership on the webshop at
ctbuh.org or contact me and I can email you the registration form.
(Trust me, I do not get commission, CTBUH is a not-for-profit, I just
wanted to pass this on...)

Below is the list of the people who will be speaking at the symposium:

Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award
From New York to Shanghai: A Lifetime of Tall
William Pedersen, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates
-Mr. Pedersen’s approach to design has been one that weds formal and
technical originality with a modesty informed by a deep respect for
spatial and historical context. Mr. Pedersen will discuss his career
and the architectural development of the tall building typology
including highlights such as: International Commerce Centre (2010),
Shanghai World Financial Center (2008), 333 Wacker (1983) and more.

Best Tall Building Americas
The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park: A New High in Corporate
and Social Sustainability
Lisa Shpritz, Senior Vice President, Bank of America
Richard Cook, Partner, Cook + Fox Architects
-Bank of America Tower has produced a high level of sustainability
within the commercial market place, creating a strong identity for
itself and acting as an exemplary execution of sustainable technology
integration into a tall building design on the most broad level with a
strong focus around the end user.

Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia
Pinnacle @ Duxton: Superdensity – Reimagining the high-rise housing
typology
Lawrence Pak, Deputy Director, Singapore Housing and Development
Board
Peng Beng Khoo, Lead Designer, ARC Studio Architecture + Urbanism
-Pinnacle @ Duxton has integrated public outdoor green spaces at
height with the creation of two usable linear skyparks as well as a
large park space on the podium. It creates a high level of density on
site without sacrificing access to green space. This is all the more
remarkable considering that the project is essentially a public
housing scheme.

Best Tall Building Europe
Broadcasting Place: Diversification of Tall Buildings for New Social
Context
George Downing, Chairman, Downing
Alex Whitbread, Partner & Lead Architect, Feilden Clegg Bradley
Studios
-Creating a unique and interesting form on the Leeds skyline, the cor-
ten clad Broadcasting Place has an iconic presence, but was not
designed as a piece of sculpture. The building’s form and elevations
were carefully planned around the optimization of daylighting and the
façade was specifically designed to reduce cooling loads/energy use.

Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa
Burj Khalifa: A New Typology for Tall Buildings
Bill Baker, Structural Partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
George Efstathiou, Managing Partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
-The Burj Khalifa’s unprecedented height required substantial
innovation in design techniques, building systems, and construction
processes. A carefully executed project, Burj Khalifa is pioneering in
its scale. The building reaches its incredible height in a graceful
and beautiful form, Y-shaped in plan and carefully engineered around
the wind.

Fazlur Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal
The Skyscraper and the Structural Process: 40 years of engineering the
Supertall
Professor Ysrael Seinuk, Ysrael A. Seinuk, PC
-With over 50 years in practice as a structural engineer, Mr. Seinuk
is a worldwide authority on the design and construction of high-rise
concrete and steel buildings. Mr. Seinuk will reflect on his
experiences and knowledge gained over his career including significant
works such as: O-14 (2010), 785 Eighth Avenue (2009); Trump World
Tower (2001); and 4 Times Square (1999).

Hope to see you there!
