In the past year or so I’ve taught a few different classes and workshops for solopreneurs.
I did a “Successful Solopreneur” three-week class in early 2024, and then a “Marketing for INFs” three-week class later that year, and I just did a “Being Seen as an Introvert Solopreneur” workshop a couple weeks ago.
Not surprisingly, the topic of building an audience and/or building a subscriber base has come up frequently during these classes, with most people asking:
But HOW do I actually do it? WHERE do I find these people who will join my audience?
The problem is that many of us have outdated ideas of how to build an audience.
There was a time when you could create a Twitter account or a Facebook business page, and then if you were active enough and posted enough new content on those platforms, you could create a nice little following over time.
But things have changed a lot over the years, and every platform is so saturated with content now that it’s not so easy to get people who want to become followers.
In the past few years, I’ve heard from so many solopreneurs that this or that platform just isn’t working for them anymore.
People have told me that they feel like they’re “talking to the void” on Instagram, or that the energy of Facebook is so toxic that they don’t even want to show up there anymore.
Even with Substack—which I believe is a great opportunity for solopreneurs—there are so many accounts that it can feel like you’re trying to be seen in a sea of writers, artists, and healers who are all trying to be seen too.
Social media CAN be helpful, don’t get me wrong, but for you to actually get somewhere with your solopreneur business, your main focus can’t be social media.
Because just not much will happen.
No matter what platforms you’re on, the main focus needs to be on building an email list.
Building an email list—yes, even if you have a Substack, because Substack is not the same as an email list, even though it shows up in someone’s inbox—needs to be your main focus as a solopreneur if you want to get somewhere.
By “get somewhere,” I specifically mean:
Make money.
Increase sales.
Get clients.
Get people in your classes and workshops.
Get contacted for interviews and other opportunities for exposure.
The most effective way to achieve all these things is by building an email list, and then creating content for, and interacting with, the people on that list.
You don’t need a lot of bells and whistles to do this.
You don’t need complicated marketing strategies to do this.
You don’t need the latest AI technology to do this.
What you do need is:
An openness to the idea of working with an email list.
A willingness to experiment with sending content to the people on that list.
An understanding of how important an email list is to a solopreneur business.
These are the three keys that WILL get you somewhere as a solopreneur:
Openness, willingness, and understanding.
The people who have taken my solopreneur classes and courses have shown me time and time again that they have this openness, willingness, and understanding, and so now I feel it’s time to move to a next-level kind of workshop for INFJ and INFP solopreneurs.
A workshop that’s all about how to build your email list.
This is the workshop I’m going to be teaching this Sunday, August 17 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm EDT.
You can find the details and register here:
How to Build an Email List in an INF-Friendly Way
This workshop will be recorded and all registrants will get lifetime access to the recording.
I’m also taking questions from those who sign up that I’ll address in the workshop, so if you have specific questions about this topic (or other solopreneur questions), feel free to send them to me and I will include them in the discussion.
Any other questions? Reply to this email.
