Docs Ireland 2026

Day 6

A group of people sit at tables in the Docs Ireland marketplace.

As Sunday rounds off this years festival, we celebrate with our diverse Selection Shorts, affecting international features and our closing film, Magilligan.

Magillian

Sunday 21st June | 6.15pm | QFT

A man in a grey jumper stands next to three sheep in a small metal enclosure, surrounded by two trees and a tall concrete wall.

Belfast director Ross McClean has won the Docs Ireland Short Film Competition with both Hydebank and No Mean City, amongst many awards internationally. He returns to the festival with his feature debut – after world premiering in competition at Visions du Réel.

Imprisoned as a teenager for a violent offence, Ryan finds purpose working with sheep on the prison farm. But the order of the inside is a stark contrast to the chaos he finds upon release as his past refuses to go quietly. Magilligan is an intimate portrait of a man caught between two worlds, with more than just his freedom at stake.

The film will be preceded by the Docs Ireland awards presentations. After the film, Ross McClean will be interviewed by filmmaker Myrid Carten.

Following the premiere, filmmakers Aaron Black and Rory Carson will be joined by BBC Assistant Commissioner Raphaelle O’Loan for a post-screening discussion, chaired by BBC journalist Patrick Fee.

Afterlives

An old mans face is reflected in the pink of a puddle.

In his first feature-length desktop documentary for cinema, filmmaker Kevin B. Lee delves into the historical traces of extremist propaganda and the efforts of those resisting its violent impacts. ‘Afterlives’ explores how to confront the violence encoded in this media, reaching beyond its toxic effects to engage power structures spanning from the colonial past to the digital age.

Earth, Wind & Fire: To Be Celestial VS. That's The Weight Of The World

3pm | QFT

Hot off the heels of Summer of Soul and SLY LIVES!, Academy Award-winning filmmaker and musicologist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson returns with another film examining the history and legacy of black music in the United States, this time turning his focus to Earth, Wind & Fire.

A Fox Under a Pink Moon

dir. Mehrdad Oskouei | Iran, United States, United Kingdom, France, Denmark | 76mins | 2025

6pm | QFT

At just 16, Soraya is already creating stunning drawings and sculptures that are as beautiful as they are dark. This strong-willed Afghan sculptor and illustrator has been trying for five years to escape Iran and join her mother in Austria.

Soraya is married to a violent man, and she is determined to shape her own future. Mehrdad Oskouei directed this film entirely remotely, with Soraya filming all the footage herself over five years using her phone. This material is interspersed with shots of her drawings and surreal animations. Making art is no idle pastime for Soraya: she puts all her worries, joys, and fears into her drawings.

The film is told from a refugee’s perspective, but also from an artist’s eye. This leads to a truly meaningful and unique experience.
