Autumn is the season of political conferences. I was joined by ScreenSkills Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Emelia Quist, at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, during which Creative UK ran an excellent programme with speakers from Carol Vorderman to Armando Iannucci. I participated in a panel about the challenges for freelancers including members from Bectu, YouTube, Directors UK, Polly Billington MP and Gordon McKee MP. Read more about the conference below.
And in Cardiff, at this year’s Wales Screen Summit, members of the ScreenSkills team joined fellow industry professionals to forge new connections, cement existing ties and take part in events focused on the continued growth of the production landscape in Wales. Read the thoughts of Wales lead Hannah Roose and Head of Unscripted and Children's TV, Sarah Joyce, below.
November welcomes Discover! Creative Careers month, an expansion on the previous week-long activity that offers 11-18-year-olds, and their teachers and families from across England, Wales and Scotland opportunities to gain insight into the range of jobs and career pathways to the creative industries. Read an overview of the programme and find out what activities some of the Discover team are most looking forward to.
November also sees the animation sector come together for Manchester Animation Festival. ScreenSkills will be supporting a session on career progression where professionals discuss ways to build skills and spot opportunities to move from junior to senior positions.
Oscar-winning film producer David Parfitt, whose credits include Shakespeare in Love and The Madness of King George, joined us for a webinar where he shared insights and advice from his five-decades long career, starting in Sunderland, via an acting career and shaping so much of British film. Watch the webinar and read a special Q&A with him, below.
