Arts Council of Northern Ireland release New Acquisitions Brochure as part of the Art Lending Scheme

From Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
26 June 2024.

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has published a catalogue of the latest acquisitions to its Art Collection. The new purchases are available for exhibition both within and outside Northern Ireland, as part of the Arts Council’s Art Lending Scheme. To view the catalogue of acquisitions to the Arts Council’s Art Collection visit https://artscouncil-ni.s3-assets.com/acni-collection-acquisitions-2022-2023.pdf

The Arts Council’s Art Lending Scheme is free and is available to borrowing organisations both within and outside Northern Ireland, who are interested in exhibiting works from the Arts Council’s diverse catalogue of works, dating from 2003 to the present day.

The Arts Council grew its overall collection to over 700 works with the purchase in 2022-23 of 42 new pieces by 15 artists. These acquisitions represent the more recent practice of artists working in Northern Ireland today with works featuring a range of disciplines including painting, sculpture, craft, print, photography and video. The newly acquired artworks reflect artistic practice that is innovative and challenging and contributes to the development of visual arts practice in Northern Ireland. Within this year’s purchases we see a number of themes surface, including an interest in the spaces we inhabit in a physical and abstract sense, an exploration of process and materiality, and a representation of past and present narratives.

Joanna Johnston, Visual Arts and Collections Officer, Arts Council of Northern Ireland said, “Many of the artists represented in the Arts Council’s contemporary art collection have major national and international reputations, including the Turner Prize-winning Array Collective, silversmith Cara Murphy, whose work is held in the Goldsmiths Company Collection, painter Colin Davidson, who was selected in 2016 to paint the official portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, two-time Turner Prize-nominee photographer Willie Doherty and BP Portrait Award winner painter Ian Cumberland.

“By offering the Collection for public display, we are helping to showcase the work of our artists and to introduce the public to Northern Ireland’s wealth of creative talent. The Arts Council’s expert staff are on hand to help in the selection and curation of works for a range of public venues.”

The Art Lending Scheme provides an opportunity to borrow from one of the leading contemporary art collections for Northern Ireland, providing the visiting public with a rich insight into the artistic practice of many of our leading visual artists, connecting to valuable education and outreach work in our communities and cultural events across the region.

To view some of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Collection visit https://artscouncil-ni.s3-assets.com/acni-collection-acquisitions-2022-2023.pdf and for more information on the Arts Council’s Art Lending Scheme please email Visual Arts and Collections Officer, Joanna Johnston at colle...@artscouncil-ni.org

2024 RCSI Art Award Winner

Donald Teskey has been announced as the winner of the RCSI Art Award 2024 in association with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and The Irish Times.

The Limerick-born artist was awarded for his oil on canvas piece, ‘Orchestral II’. It was selected from a shortlist of five pieces that were chosen from 515 works on display as part of the 194th RHA Annual Exhibition, Ireland’s largest and longest-running exhibition of visual arts.

Now in its ninth year, the RCSI Art Award celebrates the long-standing association between art, medicine and well-being. At a ceremony in RHA today, Donald was awarded an RCSI silver medal along with a prize fund of €5,000 to progress his practice, and a €10,000 commission to create a new piece for the RCSI Art Collection.

Donald Teskey was born in Co. Limerick and graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1978. He came to prominence as an artist through his skill as a draughtsman during the 1980s with several significant solo exhibitions. Since 1992 he has crafted out a substantial body of work as a painter of the landscape focusing on the ruggedness of the western seaboard. Sometimes working on a very large scale, his images reflect his response to the formal elements of composition; shape, form and fall of light.

Teskey has exhibited widely in the UK, USA, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland and South Africa. His work is held in national collections including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Ireland, Arts Council of Ireland, as well as corporate and private collections worldwide.

Donald Teskey commented on his win saying: “I’ve been at this a long time and don’t ever expect to win awards so when a prize such as RCSI award comes my way it represents a significant moment in the story of my painting career, one that deserves a large bookmark. I’m also impressed by the long-term collaboration between the RCSI and the RHA that enables this award.”
