Hailu Mergia is the legendary Ethiopian keyboardist, accordionist, and band leader. HIs story is remarkable and unorthodox, and one of survival after years spent in exile. Leading one of the top Ethiopian funk groups of the70s, The Walias Band, Hailu was forced to leave his native country forWashington DC in the 1980s where he started a new life as a cab driver. 2013 would see Hailu return to the live music circuit after blogger-turned-label-owner Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa reissued the incredible 1986 solo album, ‘His Classical Instrument’. The bookings came in, the fanbase grew, and before long his newly formed trio were back in action. Hailu’s laid-back Ethio grooves would further ripple after he released his comeback album ‘Lala Belu’ early in 2018, and playing more than70 shows across Europe in 14 months. 2020’s release ‘Yene Mircha’ only strengthened this extraordinary comeback, and the remarkable story continues.
We are delighted to be part of this wonderful chapter as we welcome Hailu Mergia and band to Belfast for the very first time.

Have you been to our monthly experimental music night yet? Handmade Music is a brand-new experimental music night in Belfast specially curated by ourselves and The Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC). Taking place on the first Thursday of the month at Accidental Theatre, the evenings feature well-known artists, lesser-known artists, and surprise guests – all performing music from the edges of their craft. You’ll hear ‘never-before-heard’ music, and music that may never be heard again. A big element of the night is about community and space for experimental/improvised music to exist…and seeing what comes out the other side.
Sets are short, there is time to chat and space to move around. It’s £5 and BYO. Hope to see you there!

| | Anna B Savage (support Albert Gold)FRI 2 JUNE | THE DEER’S HEAD, BELFAST | DOORS 8PM | BOOK HERE
London singer-songwriter Anna B Savage makes question-mark-music, captivating and powerful, navigating various recurring themes including female sexuality, self-doubt … and birds. Her 2015 EP was profound and intriguing as a project. It contained four songs, all of which paired Savage’s deep, rich voice with lyrics rife with insecurity and unfinished business and was released with very little accompanying information about the artist. The EP quickly drew the attention of Father John Misty and later Jenny Hval, both of whom brought Savage out on European tours. Her recently released album ‘in|FLUX’ (a sure to be classic debut) takes Anna a step further, into the complexities and variables of humanity, the pain or pleasure of love, loss and earthly connection, capturing it all in devastating, elating and powerful ways. We are delighted to welcome Anna B Savage and band to Belfast for the first time, for what promises to be a truly special night of music.
