Welcome to DECLARATIONS a bi-weekly newsletter by artist/writer Declan Shalvey.

This is a regular workblog featuring exclusive peeks at upcoming projects with advance releases of original art/merchandise.

ALL THE LATEST

I made it back from South Africa in one piece, to a dense workload of covers and scripts. I got a lot done in the last two weeks, though had to take some days off for some fun family stuff [including a medieval banquet, above]. Have a lot to do before the month wraps up, so strapping myself back in now. Here’s my Worklog:

  • PROJECT QUIET outline redo

  • Podcast interview for TERMINATOR METAL

  • Writing first half, THUNDERCATS #21 script

  • Lettering notes for THUNDERCATS #19

  • TERMINATOR: METAL #3 research

  • TERMINATOR: METAL #4 script notes

  • Roughs/Pencilled/inked THUNDERCATS #24 cover

  • Rough for DC Comics cover

  • Roughs for 2x Marvel Covers

Not as much work done in the last two weeks, but have been enjoying some time off, hosting visitors, catching up with family and friends as…

My little sister got married. Her and her new husband live abroad but they came back to Ireland to have a fun ceremony here. They of course, managed to get some amazing wedding photos despite the miserable weather, including the start of a rainbow. Yeah, that is a genuine rainbow, not photoshop. Unbelievable.

A friend took this snap of me and my sister after my speech. I’ll cherish this. Massive congratulations to Elaine and Ryan, what an amazing couple and what a brilliant few days.

-Anyway, back to reality. I was officially announced as one of the guests for Thought Bubble….

I’ll have a table for the whole of the show this time, my first time doing so since 2019. I’ve also agreed to take part in portfolio reviews for the show, as well as a panel. Should be fun.

-Here’s an early peek at one of the covers I did last month, a variant cover for Bad Idea’s SAVE NOW by Matt Kindt and Tomás Giorello.

-My second draft outline for PROJECT QUIET was approved, have to make some small edits for the end of this week for final approvals.

-I got a last minute cover offer from Marvel, not much notice as I usually get but I think it’s a variant they just decided to do. I am trying to take less covers now but it’s a character I love that I rarely get to draw so pencilling/inking it today. Back to writing tomorrow.

ART DECO

My commission list for NYCC and Baltimore Comic Con are now open!

I’m only taking 3 spots for each show and this time, no mail orders, so these commissions are ONLY for those attending each show. The commissions are A4 paper size (Approximately 9x12), full Figure with limited/stylized background. Go nab them asap, I expect the to get snapped up soon. If not, I’ll make them publicly available in the next week or so.

THUNDERCATS

Issue 18 was released last week, where a lot of conflicts reach boiling point. Huge thanks to Alice Leclert and Joe Mulvey for helping us get this issue over the line. Here’s the preview pages in case you missed them.

THUNDERCATS #18 preview pages

Issue 19 is all drawn, wrapping up the Knights of Thundera storyline, which will have lasting effects on what comes for our beloved Thunderans. Here’s a peek at from of Drew Moss’ excellent pages…

…And a little peek from one of Joe Mulvey’s pages

In new THUNDERCATS news, PANTHRO is getting his own one-shot from writer Ed Brisson and artist Dave Acosta. From Dynamite

The cerebral yet physically formidable master of mechanics, vehicles, and even their latest armored suits in the comics, Panthro has long been a favorite of fans across ThunderCats fandom. Now for the first time in Dynamite’s line of comics, he’s getting the spotlight solely to himself for an extra-size 28 pages of story!

The one shot will have covers by Acosta, Sebastian Piriz, Robert Quinn, and Will Robson [below].

PANTHRO #1 covers

I’m very much enjoying seeing the THUNDERCATS line break out more, letting some of the characters get a spotlight outside the main and spinoff series, without over-loading the readership.

Finally here’s an advance look at my cover for THUNDERCATS LOST #10.

TERMINATOR: METAL

Rory McConville has written his first script draft for Issue 4, we’re just going over it a bit before he nails his second draft and then hand it onto editor Nate Cosby.

Eoin Marron is wrapping up his pages for Issue 2 this week. Series colourist Colin Craker is following him with some deliciously moody colours [I’ll share next time]. Take a close look at the below page, it’s wonderful to see all the scratchy texture detail. I also really love Eoin’s more gestural mark-making line-work.

TERMINATOR: METAL #2 art by Eoin Marron

Speaking of Colin, I can reveal here that he will be the artist on Issue 3. He did a fantastic job on pages for the previous TERMINATOR series and I’m delighted he can contribute more significantly again with the upcoming ‘Cowboy Terminator’ story, once I get that damned script to him.
