Dear Stu,

It's been 13 years since we first launched the RTS Bursary Schemes, and we have now kick-started the careers of more than 400 talented young people from low-income backgrounds.

As we originally set out to widen participation in the TV and media industries, we are proud to say that 82% of our graduates have secured employment in a wide variety of roles across production, journalism and technology, including Radio 1 presenters, Aardman Animations prop-makers, Channel 4 News journalists and Sky News camera operators.

"I will honestly say to whoever will listen to me, this Bursary is the best thing to happen to me. I would recommend anyone to apply, it doesn't even take that long, and the opportunities that they give you and the community of Scholars they provide are genuinely incredible."

– Bobby Moloney, RTS Scholar

So we are really excited to open the 2026 RTS Bursary Schemes for applications today. To make sure we include both creatively and technically-minded students, we run two Schemes: the TV Production & Journalism and Digital Innovation Bursaries. They will remain open until Wednesday 24 June and we'd appreciate your help in spreading the word on socials (LinkedIn here, Instagram here). Together we can make sure we keep improving access to our industry.

Of course, we couldn't run the Schemes without the support of our partners, including All3Media, Apple TV+, Andy Taylor Foundation, Hartswood Films, Paramount, the Steve Hewlett Memorial Fund and STV. Many thanks to all of them.

What do the RTS Bursary Schemes offer?

Financial support is obviously important, and we offer a minimum of £1,500 a year during our Scholars' studies which they can put towards laptops, filming equipment or just peace of mind.

But we also provide as many work opportunities as possible. As well as access to RTS events, including our annual London and Cambridge Conventions, by drawing on the RTS' engaged community of industry professionals, we offer regular networking events and a personal mentor from their chosen field.

Amelia Nicola, one of our TV Production & Journalism Scholars, speaks glowingly of her mentor Ramita Navai, the Emmy Award-winning journalist (both pictured here). "Her warm and generous personality allowed us to forge a strong bond almost immediately, and her support and guidance have been truly transformative throughout my studies," said Amelia. She also thanks Ramita for securing work experience at Rogan Productions and HiddenLight.

A year in the life of RTS Scholars

From meeting Stephen Merchant at the RTS Patrons' Dinner, to presenting with AJ Odudu and a Summer Tour of organisations across the industry, our Scholars give us a rundown of the past year of the RTS Bursary Schemes.

“Now I feel like the world is my oyster, nothing will stop me from applying for roles and getting my dream job. The RTS has helped enormously with this, because my Bursary makes me stand out from the crowd in a sea of other CVs.”

– Ellen Fincher, Filmmaker and RTS Alumnus
