When Kath (14) and her brother Mitja (12) head off in a campervan for a summer vacation with their mother, they are actually looking to escape the dark shadow that a recent tragic accident has cast over them. But adventure awaits the siblings in “Land‘s End” where they meet an eccentric Girl (15) who lives in an abandoned hotel and a wild gang of children on the beach who are involved in some kind of territorial battle. Only by joining forces can Kath and Mitja help end this war and unravel the secret that lies behind why these children appear somehow stranded between two worlds.

CHARACTER BRIEFS:
KATH
Female-identifying
14 years old
Any ethnicity
Before the accident Kath was an open hearted, quick-witted girl with a radiant smile. Now she feels lost. Guilt and self-doubt permeate her being. Even before, Kath always had this feeling like she never really stood out in any exceptional way. The trends on social media are a mystery to her, and yet she cannot resist following her classmates’ TikToks. She’s too insecure to post herself. But in the end, there was always her brother Mitja, with whom she never had to be anyone but herself, even if that meant walking in his shadow from time to time. She envied him for his open and courageous nature, which made him popular everywhere, though it also got him into trouble. She never let him know directly that she admired him, but he could see through her occasional eye roll.
At the moment, she cannot see her own qualities. Even though she is imaginative and has a talent for grasping ideas quickly. She plays the piano and can fix stuff and deal with technical problems. Her constant feeling of being guilty for the tragic accident makes her cagey. She’s developed a very short fuse and is easily irritated. Introversion becomes Catch 22, where zombie scrolling on her phone exposes her to content that is littered with landmines; reels and pics of Mitya and Noel. She finds sanctuary in a parallel world where she can begin processing what actually happened.
MITJA
Male-identifying
12 years old
Any ethnicity
Mitja is a ‘growing up fast’ wild child with big brown eyes, a scar on his chin from some adventure. He has tousled hair which is one season away from becoming dreadlocks. A Fridays for Future supporter and digital native, Mitja is quick-witted, funny, sporty, and instantly likable. He’s a skater and often races into places and situations where ‘angels would fear to tread’. Together with his best friend Noel, he has discovered urban exploring and stencil graffiti which quenches his thirst for adventure and creativity. Mitja just does his own thing. His mother, has given up on setting boundaries for him, since he generally only interprets them as a challenge. Whenever he messes up again, his older sister Kath is his confidante. She is the emotional buffer between him and their mother. He wouldn’t trade his big sister for anyone in the world, even if he doesn’t openly admit it.
THE GIRL
Female-identifying
15 years old
Any ethnicity
Bare foot, The Girl with no name, runs through coastal scrub with the agility of a feral animal. She wields a bow and arrow and wears a light, tattered dress that has shells, feathers and bits of sea glass sewn into it. A cord dangles from the dress. Attached to it is a small white bird skull along with an ancient key. Either by her side or somewhere close, The Girl is always accompanied by her sentry; a red fox named Garm.
The Girl is an enigma, the guardian of the horizon and mistress of the mystical Hotel Horizon. Outwardly, she appears younger than Kath, but carries great wisdom within her. It is as if she has already lived for centuries. She performs a role like the Oracle in The Matrix and is the centerpiece of “Land’s End.” Like Peter Pan, she is ageless and untouchable and has a clairvoyant insight into the emotional stories of all the children she encounters.
She is eccentric and speaks at times in riddles like Rafiki from The Lion King. Mitja thinks she’s a bit loopy but he should rest assured that she is more than a match for him or any of the other Wrecks. For the Wrecks; a gang of wild kids who live on the beach, the Girl is their worst enemy.
Behind her ‘warrior princess at the end of the world’ façade, she hides a deep sense of guilt. Her goal is to make amends for her past mistake: keeping Medusa, the most unpredictable and dangerous of the Wrecks, with her—and not letting him cross the horizon.
