Still from as above, so below (Limits and Demonstrations), by Olivia Normile, 2025, Ireland, 3 minutes

Hello everyone,

Here at aemi we are relieved to feel spring in the air and with this renewed energy for a busy few months ahead.

aemi Co-Director Daniel Fitzpatrick is recently home from a great first-time visit to Glasgow Short Film Festival. Congratulations to all the Irish filmmakers featured in what was a wonderful and eclectic programme including works by some filmmakers familiar to aemi audiences, Cáit and Éiméar McClay, Dennis Harvey, Jenny Brady, and Ross McClean. A major discovery at the festival this year was the work of Iranian filmmaker Gelare Khoshgozaran who was featured in a retrospective at the festival. In general GSFF is a vibrant and enriching festival, for those looking for festivals to apply to we would highly recommend.

As we move into a new season and take stock we are conscious that many of you have been on aemi's waiting list for Artist Support Sessions for some time. In an effort to clear this backlog and create a system that works more effectively we will no longer operate through a rolling open call for these sessions. Instead from now on we will announce at least one full day of four artist support sessions each month here in our newsletter and through our social media channels. Film artists can then book a session online at a time available on that date on a first come first served basis and we will announce as soon as the slots have all been filled. Just to note these session are for Irish and Ireland-based film artists that aemi have not met with previously.

The two dates of artist support sessions available this month are April 8th and April 22nd. Once the slots are all filled we will email you with a Zoom link or an address for the meeting (in-person). Click HERE for an artist support session with aemi Co-Director Daniel Fitzpatrick on April 8th and click HERE to book a session with aemi Co-Director Alice Butler on April 22nd. Note- once you click through you will have to navigate through to the listed dates for available slots or click 'jump to the next bookable date'.

We ask that you only commit to a slot if you are certain you can use it!

We are also excited to share the trailer for 'Desire Lines', aemi's 2026 Touring Programmean annual selection of artist and experimental film that brings together a range of voices from Irish and international contemporary practice. Featuring films by Chloe Brenan, Collectif Faire Part, Eóin Heaney, Olivia Normile and Basma al-Sharif, the programme premiered in January at the Irish Film Festival Institute and will tour to Irish and international venues across 2026.

If you are interested in featuring this screening at your venue or as part of your programme contact us any time at in...@aemi.ie

In other news aemi's most recent Rough Cut event of 2026 took place in person on Tuesday February 17th at the Arts Technology Research Laboratory on Pearse Street with thanks to our partnership with Dr Sven Anderson and the School of Creative Arts at Trinity College Dublin. Film artists Thomas BennettDawn Richardson and Uma Magal all generously presented works in progress with artist and filmmaker Jenny Brady thoughtfully leading responses to all three film projects. Our next Rough Cut event will take place June 9th with filmmaker Emer Reynolds responding to projects by Olivia Normile (whose work is pictured above), Michael Dignam and Aoife Carolan. Drop us a line at in...@aemi.ie if this is an event you are interested in attending.

We have exciting programmes coming up with Bealtaine Festival in May and with Docs Ireland in June, more details to be announced very soon and we look forward to seeing you there!

IN FOCUS: MARYAM TAFAKORY - DARIA'S NIGHT FLOWERS AT PROJECT ARTS CENTRE

aemi was delighted to include UK based Iranian filmmaker Maryam Tafakory's film Nazarbazi in last year's touring programme The Said and The Unsaid. Maryam works closely with vast archives of Iranian cinema, moving beyond the familiar to create narratives that deepen and enrich our understanding of the centrality of film as a mode of expression in Iranian culture. Maryam's new work, on show at Project until April 18th, interweaves poetry, archival, and found material to explore depictions of erasure, secrecy, and censorship. Not to be missed.

As an Arts Council funded organisation aemi offers a number of different supports to film artists including workshops, funding clinics, one-on-one artist advisory sessions, as well as a newsletter highlighting events, opportunities and film festival submission deadlines. aemi also recently published a freely available online Toolkit for Film Artists

To enquire about any of these supports please contact in...@aemi.ie

aemi’s role as a resource organisation is made possible through the support of the Arts Council Ireland.
