July Highlights
America 250
This July 2026, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence—a milestone that offers the perfect moment to shine a light on the ties between America and Northern Ireland. Here in Ards and North Down, those connections run centuries deep, shaping stories of migration, faith, conflict, and friendship.

As America prepares for its 250-year milestone, join us in exploring some of the remarkable local links that helped shape the nation’s earliest chapters.

Open House Festival Picnic in the Park
Every Sunday in July and August
Ward Park, Bangor

3pm-5pm


Join us for a summer of music in the beautiful surrounds of Ward Park.

Acts performing at the bandstand include the popular Bangor punk band, Wasted Talent, who start the season off on Sunday 5th July. The lineup also features Anna's Number, always a popular billing at Picnic in the Park, the fabulous Lee Hedley Blues Band, and the much-loved The 19th Street Band, who always delight the crowd with their high-energy Americana, hillbilly, good-time music.

The series will culminate on Sunday 30th August with Otis & The Elevators, one of the most influential local soul/R&B bands of the last three decades.

This event is Grant Aided by Ards and North Down Borough Council's Tourism Department.

Summer at Cockle Row Cottages
Groomsport

The cottages are now open for the annual summer season, Thursday to Sunday, 11am - 5pm, until 13 September.

Your visit will give you a glimpse into life for a fishing family at the turn of the last century.

Our Visitor Information Centre staff will be on hand to help provide some more summer inspiration for days out. Be sure to ask them about our Explorers Packs for the little ones, to add more to your visit in Groomsport.

Families can enjoy a summer of family entertainment and activities on Sundays, 2pm - 4pm. Note, Entertainment is subject to timetabling on the day. To avoid disappointment be sure to pop over before 3.30pm to get the most of what's on.

Make a day of it in Groomsport - with its inclusive beach, cafés, play park and scenic coastal walks, it’s the perfect seaside stop.

Discover Hub Exhibit: Be Here: Desire Paths to Belonging
6 - 27 July
Discover Hub at Ards Visitor Information Centre, Newtownards


A community-led co-produced exhibition exploring whether, and how, heritage sites can enhance a sense of belonging.

Groups from The Link Family and Community Centre and Kilcooley Women's Centre have created pieces of textile, ceramics and glass which have been inspired by their exploration of National Trust - Mount Stewart Estate and Gardens.

This event is organised by the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland (GOLI)

The Brethren of Upper Ards, Newtownards, Bangor and Holywood Districts will be accompanied by 40 bands. Local members from the Association of Loyal Orangewomen of Ireland and the Junior Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland will also be in attendance.

Ballywalter Heroes LOL 1884 will lead the parade, accompanied by the award winning Ballywalter Flute Band.

Late Night Art Bangor
Last Thursday of every month*

Visitors can enjoy an art-based open house such as exhibitions, demos and workshops across the city centre, with more local businesses open late in support such as gift shops and eateries.

From Tree to Tone: The Story of a Guitar’s Journey

From Tree to Tone invites visitors into the world of Avalon Guitars, where wood, skill and sound come together to create something really special. Meet John McCartin, the celebrated traditional Irish guitar player, and the craftsmen behind the brand as they share the story of how each guitar is crafted. See the journey each instrument takes from carefully chosen timber to a finished piece, then hear and try these world‑class guitars for yourself, and learn why Avalon guitars are played by artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Katie Melua and Ricky Warwick. This engaging experience offers a fascinating and rare glimpse behind the scenes of a world‑renowned maker.

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Amateur Photography Competition 2026
The management teams of the Ring of Gullion, Mournes and Strangford and Lecale AONBs have launched their annual joint Amateur Photography.

This popular competition gives people across the three areas a great way to showcase their love of their AONBs through high-quality beautiful photography; together, we want to inspire everyone to enjoy the AONBs, by encouraging everyone to share their two passions: the beauty of the area and photography!

The title for this year’s competition is ‘Magnificent Mourne Gullion Strangford! Our Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty through the seasons.’ 

The competition is open now and will close on 14th August 2026 at 5pm, and the winning photographs selected by the judging panel will form the ever popular AONB Calendar for 2027.

The Moat and Camera Obscura
Open seasonally, until 27 Sept 2026
Donaghadee


The historic Moat and Camera Obscura has reopened for the 2026 season, welcoming visitors to explore one of Ulster’s largest mottes and enjoy stunning views over Donaghadee.

Open weekends only, 10am-4pm (last entry 3.45pm) until 27 September, the site includes the restored Gunpowder Store and the only accessible Camera Obscura on the island of Ireland - a fascinating optical experience for all ages.

Please note: the moat is closed from 1pm - 1.30pm for lunch

Admission is free, though capacity is limited and Camera Obscura sessions may be shortened during busy periods.

Make a day of it in Donaghadee with its harbour, cafés, coastal walks and family friendly spots.

Groomsport Inclusive Beach Celebrates Fifth Year of Accessibility and Inclusion
Ards and North Down Borough Council is delighted to celebrate the official launch of the fifth year of the Groomsport Inclusive Beach, in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation.

As the only facility of its kind in the Borough, the Inclusive Beach continues to provide a welcoming and accessible environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the coastline. The initiative offers a free beach equipment loan scheme alongside a programme of inclusive activities, helping to remove barriers and ensure that everyone can experience the benefits of the outdoors.

The programme is delivered in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation, an organisation committed to creating opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in activities, build friendships, and explore the world in an inclusive and supportive environment.

The 2026 season is now open and will run until Sunday 29 August, with the scheme open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to 4.30pm. A range of engaging activities will take place throughout the summer, including beach fun days and community events.

The two centres, in Bangor and Newtownards, are great spots for souvenir shopping and also provide a great range of locally made quality crafted gifts.

Please note, from 1 April - 30 September 2026 Bangor Visitor Information Centre will be in the relocated to The Old Market House on Main Street in the city centre.
