Offsite talk: A philosophers guide to ugliness

Thursday 27 November 2025, 2.30pm

Lecture: Dr Connell Vaughan, TU Dublin

From Plato’s ideal forms to Kant’s aesthetics of the sublime, philosophers have theorised beauty at length. In contrast ugliness remains a much neglected, yet also profoundly revealing, concept. This talk explores ugliness not merely as the absence of beauty, but as a rich and complex phenomenon that challenges our ethical and aesthetic assumptions.

Location: City Hall, Dublin 2. Further details here.

Online HLG Culture Club Talk: 20th Century Landscape Painting

Traditionally ranked lowest in the hierarchy of genres within art history, twentieth century landscape has both embraced new movements and is inclusive of the more traditional. Hugh Lane Gallery and NEIC City Connects

We are delighted to continue to be partnering with City Connects, a pilot government programme in the North East Inner City (NEIC) area. The aim of City Connects is to ensure that each and every student receives all the services and resources they need in order to succeed and thrive. Our Art in the Classroom programme with all of the 10 primary schools in the NEIC area sees professional artists from our panel lead creative engagements for children in their classroom. We are delighted to be linking in with Charleville Mall library where our artists are leading weekly Art Aficionados After School Art Club workshops with children from the NEIC area. We are also planning creative engagements with post-primary schools as part of the City Connects programme.

Discover our Zooom@Hugh Lane Gallery E-Zine

Zooom@Hugh Lane Gallery is our ambitious city-wide outreach programme with primary schools. Phase VII (Nov 2024–Jun 2025) brought together 574 children across 11 schools, through 90 engagements filled with play, laughter and discovery. This Zine is designed by artist and Phase VII Zooom Project Facilitator Eimear Murphy and is bursting with the amazing processes that the children engaged with. Inclusive education approaches started with curiosity about each child’s strengths and passions, meeting the children either through online pre-visits or in person to get to know them, and make sure they felt familiar with Hugh Lane Gallery and the artists ahead of their visit to the gallery or the workshop at their school. Discover more through this incredible flipbook Zine here.
