Media Opps: The Hustle, The Chicago Reader, NPR

A $15,000 grant for business reporting

The listings are now posted throughout the week on our Opportunity Finder. The Opps Finder, the monthly Creative Opportunities, and the weekly Friday Opportunities newsletters are managed by Chris Erik Thomas. Occasionally, we take a day off or publish late (or early) for mental health breaks and holidays.

If you have any questions or want to submit something for inclusion, please email ‘chris AT studyhall DOT xyz’ with “Opportunity:” in the subject line. For any technical issues, please email ‘support AT studyhall DOT xyz.’

Please note: Anything marked as “NEW” is specifically from the past five days and is included alongside opps that are newly added (but more than five days old). Finally, old opps from previous issues with upcoming deadlines can be found at the end of the newsletter.

OPP OF THE WEEK

Siri, play “Criminal” by Britney Spears. MIT Technology Review's Commissioning Editor, Rachel Courtland, is looking for pitches of “narrative features, compelling investigations, essential profiles, and super-sharp essays” on the theme of “Crime.” They are “especially interested in hearing from writers with backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in technology and science journalism, and from outside the United States.” Rates range from $1 to $2 per word. See our Opps Finder listing for more info, and send pitches to rachel.c...@technologyreview.com and include "Crime Pitch” in the subject line by September 26. (Sep 9)

ADD TO THE RATE-SHARING DATABASE

In recent years, layoffs have pushed more journalists into freelancing, with over a third now working independently, according to a 2023 study. Yet, there's little transparency around freelance rates. Freelancers often earn less than minimum wage, with significant pay gaps compared to staffers doing similar work.

To address this, the Freelance Solidarity Project launched a year-long campaign encouraging freelancers to share their rates in its Rate Sharing Database. This initiative aims to build a clearer picture of freelance pay and, ultimately, change the way we are getting paid.

CALLS FOR PITCHES

Please note: We are not endorsing every publication or company listed here. Engaging with a publication or company is entirely up to the reader. We currently sort each section by highest to lowest rates. We currently define “fair rates” as above $200 USD for around 700-800 words and above $0.20 per word for longer pieces. However, we cannot guarantee that every publication pays this rate.

Final note: Before pitching, always click the links to see if the opportunities are still available.

How do we do science faster?” The magazine publishes “clear writing and clear thinking about things that matter" and their “editorial perspective is shaped by the philosophy of Effective Altruism, but not limited to it.” The rate is $2,000 for 3,000-4,000 words, and drafts are due in October. Love? To give your kids xyz?). The rates are $200 to $300, and you must provide photos and verification documents.
