5 Steps to Writing Better Dialogue

Does your character have an intention in every scene? Do they want something? Does their dialogue indicate that? If not, your dialogue likely feels overwrought rather than lived-in, forced rather than natural.

But when you know what your character is trying to do in a scene, the dialogue practically writes itself. It becomes authentic because it emerges from want, not from what you need to happen "just because."
