WHAT'S TO COME

Howdy folks. The dust has settled on Short Com's run in London last September. (Though, we'll be back sooner than later. More to come.) Big thanks to all those who came, filmmakers and audiences alike. We had a great time at Rich Mix, The Arzner and Coldharbour Blue. A big thanks to the venues and our volunteers.

We spent most of October at the BFI LFF and doing work behind the scenes. We highly recommend you checking out Twinless, DJ Ahmet and Roofman for when they are out or where you can find them. So we've got a slightly bumper newsletter for you. But we've got some news and offers that will hopefully be of interest.

WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT!

Well done to Jimmy Graham, who won the 2025 TV Sitcom Writing Competition. Jimmy's script, Royalty, came out on top after all the judges' scores. Apart from bragging rights and the award. Jimmy won an annual subscription to British Comedy Guide Pro. The fellow writers who made the SHORTLIST were Martin Lancaster, Annabel Edmonds, Lee Crompton and Daniel Higley. They will be included in our touting to our industry contact list.

A big thanks to all those who submitted, British Comedy Guide, our reading team and to the judging panel of Joshua Buckingham, Morwenna Gordon and Gemma Craig.

The competition will reopen in the Spring of 2026.

The second-ever edition of our feature screenplay competition is underway. We're delighted to name two of our judging panel members for 2026.

Natalie Metzger - VP of Development and Production at Vanishing Angle  - Werewolves Within, Thunder Road, Queens of The Dead

Jenette Kahn - Partner at Double Nickel Entertainment - Gran Torino, Book of Henry, Grow

We will have another jury member soon.

We're also bloody chuffed to have My SMASH Media as a sponsor for the festival. Some of you might be familiar with them from the Glasgow Funny Features live pitches. My SMASH Media is the new IP matchmaking platform aimed at matching writers or filmmakers with producers and investors. The top five writers will receive an annual pro membership on the platform. And the overall winner will have a 30-minute one-to-one pitching consultancy meeting with a representative from the team.

You can make a free account with them. But they have a limited time 50% promo offer if you would like to sign up for a pro member now.

SI-FAN 2026

We have been beavering away, working toward grand plans for SI-FAN 2026 in early May in Edinburgh. Aside from looking to put on the most exciting genre features and shorts. We are working towards our own unique short film challenge aimed towards connecting selected scripts with filmmaking teams. To help connect aspiring and talented writers with filmmaking talent who are Scottish or based in Scotland.

Our other big plan is to run an industry day specifically for filmmakers looking to make no/micro/low-budget feature films, which are either genre or comedy. This will be for filmmakers in the UK and Ireland. The day is intended to educate, inspire and connect filmmakers, writers, animators and professionals working in TV and film. It is somewhat acknowledged that genre and comedy are not as well supported as traditional drama by public funders for certain reasons. So we want to help and create a platform that not only looks to fill a void but also puts an arm around the community. We're working on creating a panel of events to have industry professionals discuss and pass on wisdom to filmmakers as to how they can 'punch above their weight' when it comes to script development, raising finance, reducing budget costs, production hacks and how to market and sell your film. Furthermore, a potential mini-market for interested funders.

So keep tuned.

To submit your short or feature. The regular deadline to enter SI-FAN is the 7th of December. Remember, the Best Scottish Short Film is sponsored by No Drama who are kindly offering £1500 in-kind-kit hire.

  1. In the meantime, we will be running a creative mixer in Glasgow at the CAA Third Eye Bar on November 18th from 7 PM. If you fancy coming along, sign up via Eventbrite to confirm your place here

SHORT COM 2026

We want to give you a heads up of some of our forthcoming screenings and plans for Short Com 2026.

The previously postponed festival London animation screening is likely to be taking place at Crouch End Art House on February 12th. We sadly had to postpone the previous screening for reasons beyond are control. But we will hopefully have details for the 12th soon.

We had such a great time at London's only LGBTQ+ cinema the Arzner, we will be back with some ad hoc LGBTQ+ special Short Com programme screenings run by Katie Orves. We should be back in late March with a screening and networking event.

As well as our planned screening at the GFT in March as part of the Glasgow International Comedy Festival. We are also going to be at the CAA for the day with our festival programme and some networking on the 14th of March.

Keep tuned via our social media profiles.
