Hello everyone,
First off, happy new year to all, we hope you had a restful holiday season. We are off to a very busy start and look forward to seeing you this January and throughout 2026.
Tomorrow, on Thursday January 15th we will host our annual Arts Council Film Funding Clinic at the Irish Architectural Archive from 11am to 1pm. This event hosted by aemi will begin with a presentation from Fionnuala Sweeney, Head of Film and Architecture at the Arts Council, on the Arts Council’s role in film and the funding opportunities available in 2026 to support film artists. This will include plenty of time for questions from the audience and will be followed by a short presentation from aemi co-directors Alice Butler and Daniel Fitzpatrick about the range of supports aemi provides to film artists.
This event is currently FULLY BOOKED but please contact us at in...@aemi.ie if you would like us to add your name to our waiting list for the session. We will share an audio recording of the event online as soon as possible afterwards if you can't make it.
On January 22nd we are very excited to premiere our 2026 touring programme 'Desire Lines' at the IFI Dublin. Our touring programme is an annual selection of artist and experimental film that brings together a range of voices from contemporary Irish and international practice. Featuring films by Eóin Heaney, Basma al-Sharif, Chloe Brenan, Olivia Normille, and Collectif Faire Part, the screening will be followed by a Q&A with Chloe Brenan, Olivia Normile and Eóin Heaney.
We are also thrilled to share a new work from Juana Robles as part of our ‘Artist in Focus’ online series. We are delighted to have set up this online platform through which aemi draws attention to an Irish or Ireland-based filmmaker through an interview with them about their practice and a freely available screening of one of their works for a limited time period. In the current iteration of 'Artist in Focus' you can watch Juana’s film Bodyverses – Frances Mezetti: 2nd Lock (2025) for a limited time. This film follows Dublin artist Frances Mezzetti as she explores her lifelong bond with her sister Maria through performance.
Once again this year aemi were invited by the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) to submit a work by an Irish or Ireland-based film artist to screen as part of their DINAMO programme. DINAMO is a collective of international artist film distributors that meet each year at the festival to share works from each of their collections. This year aemi selected Chloe Brenan’s film Verdigris (2025) to screen at the festival. Chloe is a graduate of aemi’s Developing Your Practice as a Film Artist programme and will travel with aemi to the festival at the end of January to present her beautiful film.
In addition aemi are delighted to announce Jesse Jones’ stunning film Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon will also screen at IFFR as part of the festival's Tiger Short Competition.
In 2026 we will continue to scale aemi's ambitions and part of this is an expansion of our board; in saying this we are thrilled to welcome filmmaker Frank Sweeney to aemi's Board of Directors. Our board is instrumental in guiding aemi to realise our strategic function to serve the needs of film artists and advocate for them and their work so that it can reach as wide an audience as possible. We are immensely grateful to Frank and know that his thoughtful and creative insights will greatly enhance aemi's operations.
We hope to see you all soon,
Alice, Daniel, Anne
