Lily Blau Lear is a journalist/playwright-turned-TV writer. She has created series for Sony, StyleHaul, Lindy Goldstein Productions, and Pinewood Studios/Twelve Town. Additionally, she has developed series with Warner Bros., LuckyChap Productions, Blondie Girl, Intuition Productions, and Busted Shark. She has also been a staff writer on the teen dramas CROWN LAKE and CHICKEN GIRLS, and the kids comedy MANI.
Theatrically, Lily’s work has been produced at Boston Court Theatre, The LA Fringe, and The New York Vignette’s festival, among others. Lily has also served as the Playwright in Residence at Occidental College. As a journalist, Lily has written essays and articles for the Huffington Post; Sirens Magazine (now Sexy Feminist Magazine); Alternet; and Mercer Street. Lily holds a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with concentrations in writing, drama, and French. She is currently working on a novel.
How She Landed Her First Opportunity
“I wrote a play right after I graduated from college. Before its first professional production, my director and I did two Equity Staged Readings. A friend of my director saw one of the readings back in NYC and reached out when he moved to LA. I sent him my first TV script and a year later, he gave me my first job. It was a good lesson in sharing my work.”
The Turning Point
“There was the first time I got a check for my writing (I framed it). There was the first time I didn’t want to take a meeting because I already had two writing jobs. But my career has had plenty of ups and downs. So maybe the real turning point was when I realized there is no true “arriving,” just a next turn in the road.”
A Game-Changing Piece of Advice
“Tastes change, what’s selling changes, not every season is going to be your season. Sometimes it works to chase trends or try something new. It’s also okay - and often more sustainable - to lean into your strengths and trust that your moment will come back around.”
What Made a Difference
“I was always a very intuitive writer. Tawnya was the one who taught me structure. The worksheets from the very first Script Anatomy class I took made a huge difference in all my writing going forward.”
Daily Habits
“If I’m struggling with consistency, I block out my writing time in my calendar. The more I’m struggling, the shorter/more attainable I make the time blocks.”
Pushing through Resistance
“Just keep writing. If one project is stuck, I pick up something else for a bit. Or just open a blank document and free write — explore whatever feels like it isn’t working from a new angle without pressure. Eventually, I surprise myself. That surprise is what kicks resistance and self-doubt for me.”
What Inspires Her
“I rewatched Gossip Girl all the way through shortly after my first Script Anatomy class, and it really clinched TV drama structure for me. The show is serialized, but each episode’s theme, arc, scope, and central event are clear. This show plays by the rules so faithfully, it made it easy for me to internalize them. Personally, I needed to learn the rules well before I could really start to play.”
