The B-SideSome Monthly NI Music Trivia! |
The Three-Song Riot of '64 The Ulster Hall is rightly famous for hosting massive milestones, like Led Zeppelin debuting Stairway to Heaven in 1971. But seven years before that, it hosted a gig that didn't even make it past the fifteen-minute mark.
On 31 July 1964, The Rolling Stones rolled into Belfast at the very height of their early "bad boy" fame. The crowd inside the Ulster Hall was so primal and hysterical that fans breached the stage security almost immediately. After the band managed to play just three songs, the sheer volume of screaming and bodies rushing the stage forced the promoters to call the whole thing off for safety reasons. It remains one of the shortest headlining sets in the venue’s 160-year history, proving that Belfast crowds have always been cut from a slightly different cloth. |
