A new national survey has launched examining the provision, capacity, and geographic distribution of visual artists’ workspaces across Ireland. The research project, commissioned by the Arts Council and delivered by Visual Artists Ireland, seeks to gather essential data to inform future support and development in visual arts infrastructure.
By engaging directly with workspace providers—both funded and unfunded—the survey aims to build a detailed understanding of current infrastructure, demand, and gaps. The findings will guide the Arts Council’s efforts to shape policy, strengthen supports, and identify opportunities for collaboration across the sector.
All visual arts workspace providers are encouraged to take part. The survey is now open and can be accessed at https://visualartists.ie/acs2025oi.

 , 14/04/2025 - 17/05/2025 - Hamilton Gallery, 4 Castle Street, Sligo Exhibition continues 12th April - 17th May 2025.
“…I try to 'dance along the cultural fault-line', presenting complex narratives that may be interpreted in opposite ways, depending upon the viewer's perspective. My intention is in part to present the intelligent viewer, aware of contrary interpretive possibilities, with questions and dilemmas: Which interpretation to choose? Whose side am I on? Am I joking or serious? Am I crazy or sane? Is this satire or paranoid fantasy? My hope is that the intelligent viewer, aware that different interpretive possibilities cannot be removed, that the picture cannot thus be easily used as propaganda by either side, or easily disarmed and rendered innocuous, is led towards a more complex and nuanced negotiation with the image. The viewer's own interpretative responsibilities must be acknowledged. The implicit threat to the viewer's interpretation and supporting worldview remains.
I know in presenting such complex work dealing with controversial and politically charged topics I'm making serious demands on my viewers' tolerance and sophistication. I risk being identified with the enemy and denounced by both sides.
I think the potential reward for taking this risk is work with deep cultural resonance that tackles the serious issues of our day and cannot easily be ignored or forgotten, even by those who dislike it. In an age of crisis and revolutionary politics, the imaginative arts typically acquire renewed force and vigour and command our attention because they can reveal what is going on deep in our collective psyche and beneath the surface of our culture, especially when authority proves weak, fallible and deluded. What we find in the depths can and perhaps should be shocking to any civilised, reasonable observer sensitive enough to read the signs. I can vouch for this. I, too, see the madness in my work, and in my times.” - Conor Walton Essay on Asymmetrical Warfare 071 9143686 www.hamiltongallery.ie in...@hamiltongallery.ie

, 19/04/2025 - 21/06/2025 - 11:00 am - 5:00 pm The Model, The Mall, Sligo Marianne Keating; No Irish Need Apply
Sat. 19 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025
The Model is delighted to present a new film work by the artist, Marianne Keating, entitled No Irish Need Apply, which has been commissioned by The Model especially for The Niland Collection. This single-channel film examines the realities of Irish migration to England during the twentieth century.
The Irish experience in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s was profoundly shaped by the political violence of the Troubles, and the resulting anti-Irish sentiment that was widespread within the British government and media. This period saw an entire Irish immigrant community, many of whom had settled in post-war Britain to build lives and contribute to society, targeted by restrictive legislation, denied social welfare benefits, and subjected to discrimination.
When British rule in southern Ireland ended in 1922, the lack of a robust industrial base created an unsustainable economic situation, forcing thousands of Irish citizens to seek new employment opportunities in Britain. The designation of the "special relationship" between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, allowed free movement of Irish citizens to the UK, but was in itself a remnant of the colonial era. This arrangement, while seemingly beneficial for Irish migrants, also served colonial interests. British Cabinet Papers from 1955 reveal that maintaining the flow of Irish labour was necessary to support the continued development of the UK economy.
By the late 1970s, the Irish formed the largest immigrant community in London. The escalation of the war in Northern Ireland and the IRA bombing campaign in mainland Britain led to increased tensions for the Irish community, and the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) was established in 1978, followed in 1981 by Irish in Britain Representation Group (IBRG), to support their welfare needs.
The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was rushed through British Parliament in 1974 following the Guildford and Birmingham pub bombings. This act granted sweeping powers to law enforcement, and was often used to target innocent Irish individuals. Under this legislation, Irish people were subjected to arbitrary arrests, extended detentions without charge, and exclusion from Britain without legal recourse. Such measures facilitated mass surveillance and reinforced stereotypes that cast suspicion on the entire Irish community. Everyday life became fraught with fear as Irish accents alone could provoke verbal abuse, physical assault, or even denial of service in shops and workplaces.
This systemic prejudice extended beyond public policy into social attitudes. Irish-owned businesses and homes were targeted with violence, and many people avoided Irish Centres and pubs out of fear of victimisation. The quashing of the convictions of the Guildford Four in 1990 and the Birmingham Six in 1991 finally exposed the injustices faced by the Irish in Britain, forcing a reckoning with the oppressive policies and prejudice that had silenced a vibrant community for decades. These revelations marked a turning point in reclaiming dignity and challenging anti-Irish racism.
Marianne Keating is an Irish artist and researcher, based in London. She has a practice-based PhD in Visual & Material Culture and Contemporary Art Practice entitled, 'They don't do much in the cane-hole way', Hidden Histories of the Irish Diaspora in Jamaica, from Kingston University, London. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art, London. Keating was shortlisted to represent Ireland at the 2022 Venice Biennial and has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and internationally. In 2023, Keating’s new work An Ciúnas / The Silence was exhibited at the Showroom Gallery in London, and in 2024, it toured to selected venues in Ireland. Upcoming exhibitions and new commissions in 2025 include a newly commissioned multi-screen work for The Irish Pavilion, at the World Expo, Japan; and a solo show at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin.
No Irish Need Apply has been made possible through an Arts Council Bursary Award. It has been acquired by the Graeve Collection, which is on long-term loan to the Niland Collection.

, 18/04/2025 - 16/05/2025 - Studio 12 Exhibition/Project Spa, 1st Floor, Backwater Artists Group, Wandesford Quay, Cork Reach out, pull Me closer – Murrough O’Donovan
18 April – 16 May 2025
Opening event Thursday 17 April, 6pm
Studio 12, Backwater Artists Group, Wandesford Quay, Cork
Tuesday to Friday, 10am – 5pm.
Backwater Artists Group is delighted to present Reach out, pull Me closer, a solo exhibition by Murrough O’Donovan. This exhibition aims to construct a ritual space, where the viewer is drawn into the natural cycles of creation and destruction present in all living things, and meditates on how these have been warped by human activity. The installation also considers the loss of ritual in modern culture and how this has damaged our connection to the world around us. It questions whether we can create a renewed bond that will allow us to return to a more balanced relationship with non-human life and the biosphere.
Partially sculpted pieces of a fallen beech tree, taking inspiration from the ‘world trees’ of ancient mythologies, represent the body of the earth, upon which various processes and materials propose a metaphorical reflection on the effects of the Anthropocene on our planet.
Stand on their body,
Put your feet in their blood,
Put your head in their arms,
Stretch with them,
Reach out to Me,
Pull Me down,
Pull Me closer.
About the Artist:
Murrough O’Donovan is an Irish Artist based in Cork City. He was born in London in 2000 and moved back to the family farm, in West Cork, in 2009. He completed a QQI Level 5 course in Art and Design at Cork College of Commerce, West Cork Campus in 2020. He graduated with First Class Honours in Fine Art from MTU Crawford College of Art and Design in 2024. He was awarded the Backwater Artists Ciaran Langford Memorial Bursary, for his degree show work and the MTU Crawford College of Art & Design Sculpture Residency. Exhibitions include Chrysalis (2023), Lest We Salt the Earth (2024) and Reach out, pull Me closer (upcoming).
Working in sculpture, installation and drawing, Murrough O’Donovan explores ecological destruction and the traumatic effects it has on individuals, communities and the natural world. Taking inspiration from ancient mythology and rituals, as well as the traumatic effects of industrial resource exploitation on the landscape and ecosystems around the world, Murrough creates sculptures and installations using wood taken from fallen trees, from the forest around his home in West Cork.
About the Backwater Artists Group:
Backwater Artists Group is an artist-led organisation, located on Wandesford Quay, in the heart of Cork City. Our mission is to support and advocate for visual artists, allowing them to thrive, to foster a deep appreciation and enthusiasm for the visual arts within the community and to keep sites of production at the heart of Cork city. The goal of Cut From The Same Cloth is to foster connections that pave the way for meaningful integration of minority voices with UCD Conway Institute’s Patient Voice in Health Research initiative. Arising from an art and health research collaboration the exhibition Cut From The Same Cloth centres around the fabric of our lives. A handwoven tapestry documents a unique community of members of local minority communities and biomedical researchers.
Exhibition Details
Date & Time: 17 April to 29 May 2025.
Opening Times: Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-5pm, Sunday, 11am-5pm.
Admission: Free.
About the Artist - Lorna Donlon
Lorna Donlon is a tapestry weaver who merges the ancient art of weaving with scientific concepts. With a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, she creatively bridges art and science through tapestry and installations inspired by the scientific practices of categorising and labelling nature.
Cut From The Same Cloth is Donlon’s second exhibition curated with UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research.
During her time as the UCD College of Science Artist in Residence (2022-23), Donlon created the “measuring tape of my life.” This piece, inspired by scientific methods of measurement, represents her life through fabric pieces from garments worn by her grandmother, parents, herself, and her three daughters. The section representing her daughters spans the longest length, symbolising the future.
Donlon incorporated this measuring tape into her tapestry, connecting the fabric stories shared by women from minority communities and UCD Conway biomedical researchers during their “Get Togethers.” It acts as a symbolic thread, intertwining personal histories with scientific narratives.
Connecting Biomedical Research with Community Voices
In 2024, the Get Togethers initiative brought researchers from UCD Conway Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Research together with women from minority communities across Ireland. These gatherings aimed to build lasting relationships and integrate diverse voices into UCD Conway’s Patient Voice in Health Research initiative.
United by the shared significance of fabric in our lives, women exchanged stories at venues including the Hunt Museum in Limerick, the Irish Islamic Cultural Centre, the National Museum at Collins Barracks, and community centres in Kilkenny, Dundalk, Roscommon, and Dublin. Participants explored biomedical research through fabric prints depicting studies on cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, bacterial vaccines, and more.
Researchers, in turn, shared personal fabric stories. Professor Amanda McCann, who studies triple-negative breast cancer, brought organza fabric stained with cerbB2/HER2 from a breast tumour, alongside the dress her mother wore to her PhD conferring in 1992. These exchanges fostered deeper understanding, bridging science and personal experience. 353 (0)61 312 833 https://www.huntmuseum.com/whats-on/cut-from-the-same-cloth/ in...@huntmuseum.com

 , 15/04/2025 - 07/06/2025 - Golden Thread Gallery, 23-29 Queen Street, Belfast Exhibition continues 12th April - 7th June 2025.
‘Decoys and Ghosts’ at the Golden Thread Gallery is an ambitious exploration of two recurring sculptural themes in John Rainey’s work over the last 10 years – imitation and revisiting. Materials, their histories and associated processes have always formed a core component of his practice.
In the staging of work in exhibitions, Rainey aims to create environments and designed experiences where groupings of sculptures form relationships and act as installations. Plinths become sculptural extensions, evolve into dioramas, or morph into viewing platforms for audiences to climb.
This exhibition will feature a combination of retrospective and new work by the artist, centered around a new large scale installation. As the the broadest survey of Rainey’s work to-date, it will be an opportunity to explore recent developments in his practice, alongside works that trace his path to this current moment. 02890330920 https://goldenthreadgallery.co.uk/ in...@gtgallery.co.uk

 , 15/04/2025 - 07/06/2025 - Golden Thread Gallery, 23-29 Queen Street, Belfast Exhibition continues 3rd April – 7th June 2025.
The Golden Thread Gallery is delighted to present new work by Belfast sculptor Stuart Calvin in our Lower Gallery, opening on Late Night Art in April 2025.
Calvin’s sculptural work explores themes of human fragility, and the search for meaning in a world marked by political turmoil, societal collapse, and environmental anxiety. His art delves into the shared experience of feeling helpless in the face of seemingly insurmountable world tragedy and reflects on reclaiming control and personal agency in the face of this chaos.
Through mediums like wax, gold, plaster, metal, and light, Calvin’s practice bridges the personal and the universal, offering an immersive installation of sculpture that invites reflection and connection. His work attempts to turn darkness into a resonant exploration of hope, truth, and discovery, reflecting a collective uncertainty and the precarious nature of human existence today. 02890330920 https://goldenthreadgallery.co.uk/ in...@gtgallery.co.uk

Securing and Delivering Per Cent for Art Projects – with Clodagh Emoe
Public art commissions and self-initiated projects are vital components of a sustainable art practice. In this session, artist Clodagh Emoe will provide insights into navigating the process of securing commissions, both nationally and internationally.
Drawing from her extensive experience, Clodagh will map out the journey of various public art projects she has undertaken, offering practical advice, strategies, and reflections on best practices. Whether you are seeking to work within structured public art frameworks or to develop your own independent projects, this webinar will provide valuable guidance on:
- Approaching public art opportunities and understanding the commissioning process.
- Developing self-initiated projects and securing funding.
- Navigating the complexities of site-specific and community-engaged works.
- Learning from real-world case studies of Clodagh’s projects.
- Practical tips for sustaining a career in public art.
This session is ideal for artists looking to expand their practice into public art commissions or develop self-directed projects with impact. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A, allowing attendees to gain tailored advice.
Bio
Clodagh Emoe describes her art practice as an embodied enquiry. For over twenty years her practice has explored liminality, through its multiple interpretations; as an experiential state, as an ‘other; space or threshold. Her work is often site-specific and underpinned by ritual, creating spaces where tacit knowledge can flourish and thought may be ‘felt’. Her most recent work engages with the biodiversity crisis, drawing on the power and potency of plants and exploring awe as transformative experience.
Clodagh’s work has been commissioned by IMMA, Visual, Centre for Contemporary Art, The Model, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Project Arts Centre, Serpentine Gallery, London, documenta XIII, Kaisel, Taipei Biennial, Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Nýló, The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik. Clodagh is currently a member of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.
