Stories of the Week: Contest #331

Welcome back to your weekly wrap-up of the Reedsy Prompts contest! This week’s tales are hot off the press, so settle in and check out our latest contest winner, the runners-up, and recent popular entries in your preferred genres below.

Also, don’t forget to like and comment on your favorites! Our authors work hard on their submissions every week — your support and feedback mean the world to them.

Winner 🏆

First Snow by Mark Kodak

A woman wakes to first snow and must fulfill a promise that demands winter boots and an iron will. How far can her love travel on a mountain that seems so indifferent?

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Start or end your story with someone watching snow fall.

📌 Why it won: Guest judge Evelyn Skye said: "'First Snow' captured me with its gorgeous prose. This short story painted an evocative picture of the quiet strength and love that finds it way through grief. I appreciated how Kodak's setting was as much a character as Ruth and her partner, all their histories rich and deeply portrayed. Bravo!"

Runners-up 🏅

The Ravens Who Watch by A. Y. R

A drifting postgraduate moves to a remote Icelandic town where winter lingers and ravens pay close (unwanted) attention. Who knew studying birds could unravel one’s sanity — or one’s humanity?

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Include a moment in which someone knocks on a door right before or after midnight.

You're Melting. by James Scott

During an Alaskan winter, a teenage girl tries to survive in a remote cabin where a father’s idea of honesty makes the cold outside seem almost kind.

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Set your story in a place where something valuable is hidden beneath the ice.
